I wished I could grow dendrocalamus bamboos here, but the materials, and heating required for it doesn't make it feasible to build a giant greenhouse over it to keep the temperatures above freezing through the winter.
Yeah, I'm wishing now I had planted it a bit further away from the fence. Like with my other bamboos though the intent was to take divisions of the ones that encroached the fence, however, almost all the new growth from this stand keeps going towards the fence. Hopefully I can take a division or two from it this year and coerce it into growing towards my yard, not away.
Someday maybe I'll find a bamboo my wife likes...in the meantime I'll keep planting more!

I know that it is cutting it very close, but I'm hoping that these little shoots have enough time left in the growing season to reach full height, branch/leaf out, and harden off.

The 2nd shanghai III shoot looks nicely hardened off and in the process of leafing now and it was around the same stage as the ones above 3 weeks ago. The only difference is that it will be later in the season and cooler now.

Here's the late moso bicolor shoot that is now 2x the height it was only 4 days ago with highs in the 90s. I guess it should have enough time to harden off eh?

This is the first time I've ever seen a late shoot from it, but I guess it's telling me that I took too many divisions off it this year. I didn't know this species was capable of producing whip shoots.

Took a long walk around my property today looking for potential spots to plant some more of my potted bamboos. I noticed new autumn shoots on:

Borinda Angustissima (tissue cultured)
Borinda Macclureana (tissue cultured)
Fargesia Denudata (tissue cultured)
Hibanobambusa Tranquilans 'shiroshima'
Phyllostachys Iridescens
Phyllostachys Rubromarginata
Phyllostachys Viridis 'robert young'
Pseudosasa Longiligula
Sinobambusa Intermedia

Oh no...
With late autumn weather with morning temperatures just a bit above freezing, Borinda fungosa started shooting again. One shoot that is about one month old is now at around 1.5m high and needs at least another month to branch out, but there's another one on the way. Last year all the shoots died, together with older culms that got broken due to heavy snow. This year, I fear, the same thing might happen. What triggers the shoots to appear that late in the season?

I also noticed fresh Phyllostachys aureosulcata Spectabilis rhizome from only a month ago starting to push out three shoots. Pseudosasa japonica and Hibanobambusa - Shiroshima also decided to go all out. Hopefully we get some more warm weather after this cold spell that almost got us first frost.

Tarzanus - Sounds like that fungosa comes is native to an area well below the snowy altitude. Must be quite tender.

I am still seeing shoots from my Oldhamii, Buddha's Belly, Alphonse Karr, Silverstripe, golden, green groove, and black. Also got my first culm from some recently planted Kanapaha which looks about double the thickness of the previous years growth. And lastly my dendrocalamus Giganteus has sent up its first new culm since I planted it a couple of months ago. Too early to tell if it's bigger than the other culms.

The weather here continues to be in the 80's and sunny.
