Hi,
I have recently planted some Phyllostachys Nigra bamboo, and I am
Not sure if the new leafs it seems to be growing are actually a weed attacking it. Any help would be much appreciated, please see pics.

The elongated heart shaped leaf is from a vining plant that likely comes from a tuber in your rootball and will keep popping up seemingly forever!

Thank you Needmore, do I need to remove this and it’s runners then? It’s spreading like wildfire.

Re: Bamboo or weed
If you keep snapping/pulling the vine from the emergence point the underground part will not harm the bamboo, you might do damage to the bamboo trying to remove the tuber(assuming there is one), but I would try and pull the thing out at least until it snaps. Someone here will tell you what that is, I'm unsure but vines will take over the planet...

That is Convuluvus (bindweed). If it is well established it can be difficult to eradicate. To reiterate needmore, I would keep pulling out the top-growth to starve the rhizome and the bamboo will help below ground. I worked at a place with a rose bed that was riddled with the stuff.
I have seen Ph. nigra for sale at B&Q with both bindweed and ground elder.

Yes, I thought that might be bindweed mine is not so lush but I have it here and pull some everyday. It will be a few inches tall about 2-3 days after I snap it off, never seen anything with so much rhizome energy/vigor.iain wrote:That is Convuluvus (bindweed). Re: Bamboo or weed
If it is a new planting and the bindweed is growing vigorously it might be better to lift the bamboo and pull out as much of the rhizome as possible. That would greatly reduce the vigour of the weed and the time spent having to pull the vine.

Re: Bamboo or weed
Binder vine is a weed related to morning glory. I would not bother pulling boo on account of it, especially this time of year. It is easy to keep at bay with a string trimmer, but it can get going and pull things down if you let it. Not sure if that one is annual or perennial, but they are herbaceous so are not that hard to keep up with.

When they show up in places not easy to string trim they are murder to keep up with.

They are major pain in the rear! You can cut them, pull them out or do whatever you can imagine, but they always leave a chunk of root in the soil. That piece sprouts two or three new vines and the battle gies on... And on...
The worst thing is, roots are great source of food for our voles. You would think thay's a good thibg, until you see how the vermin spreads the root chunks around. They basically plant them. Their food storage chamber is filled with it in the fall. They don't eat much during winter and they rather eat fresh roots, except when the soil gets frozen deeper than their tunnel system, which is - never.
