If people ask what you're doing, tell them it's a breathing exercise and that they should try it. ;)
A new use for bottled sparkling water? :P I'm sure the french bamboo's would prefer Perrier :)

We actually did have a lot of that. It was the first thunderstorm.

Soil was warmer than rain, rain actually brought some snowflakes and temperature couldn't be much higher than 0C. Temperature dropped more than 10C (from record high for March, 27C to normal 5C do 7C).

Difference between Edulis Columbo and bicolor. Here's a comparison of the 2 from the French forums. It looks like the difference is that Columbo colors look a bit less sharp, more shoots, and perhaps longer internodes.

Interesting. You might run a controlled trial to determine which sparkling water most encourages bamboo shoots. :drunken:

A fraction of the acids of natural rain are nitric and nitrous acids formed from the nitrogen oxides produced by lightning.
In comparison, industrial pollution can greatly multiply the acid content of rain.

Interesting. So, if Perrier and cigarettes contribute to the vibrancy of french boo then I am going to leave a box of lemon chicken near my P. Vivax and see if it improves culm wall strength.

Perhaps a squirrel would salivate and die from dehydration just by looking at these pictures

Best keep that cigarette sucking bamboo away from innocent tomato plants 'cause that mosaic virus is a persistant one.

Chances are the varmints are going to love that lemon chicken. ;)

Well, I was out walking my dog and a Spectabilis shoot a couple inches high jumped out at me. I didn't look very hard for others because I was cold and frankly I didn't want to find any more. I think its too cold. We got a couple inches of snow over night and the temperature was in the teens. I sure as heck didn't trek out to my other groves anxiously hoping for more shoots as I would have in warmer circumstances.

From 2010 here in Oregon, I had boos shoot in this progression:

Late March:
Phy. aureosulcata Harbin inversa
Pseudosasa japonica
Phy. edulis (Mighty Moso)
Phy. violascens

Mid April:
Phy. aureosulcata (type)
Phy. aureosulcata Harbin
Phy. aureosulcata Spectabilis
Phy. aureosulcata Alata
Phy. nuda
Phy. vivax Aureo. (way ahead of all the plain vivax for some reason)

Late April:
Phy. aurea (late this year)
Phy. nigra

Early May:
Phy. rubromarginata
Phy. bam. Castillon
Phy. vivax (monster 2"+ culms)
Bam. oldhamii (last fall's big shoot is reinvigorated and growing again?!)
Phy. iridescens

Late May:
Phy. bam. Allgold
Happy trails...

Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' is starting to shoot.

Bashania Fargesii shoots are getting alot thicker as they come up.

No phyllostachys here are shooting yet...Spectabilis could start shooting any day now. I'm ready for some big culms this year! I even bought some tree calipers to measure em!

Biggest culm from 2013: Bambusoides 1.75" at ground level, 1.5" at chest height.
