Japonica and F. Robusta 'Pingwu' shot April 10 or so.

Both had a tremendous down-size. The Japonica shoots are about half the thickness of last year's shoots. I'm hoping that my moving them late in the summer is what caused the problem.

My moso shoot was gone the next day.I am going to circle the next one with rat traps.

I imagine my mastiff will set them off before anything else does.

My Moso finally has started shooting, almost a month later than last year. Still sizing up nicely.

Those are some nice gains.

The only thing that is up so far are the fargesias. The 1 fargesia that I transplanted 1.5 years ago appears to be making a pretty good upsize with shoots bigger than the culms on the mother clump which is poorly located.

LOL. I'm an urban dweller, and our lot is covered with huge post oaks. Digging another trench or installing a barrier is just not in the cards. I would love to see this one unleashed- a 30' beauty covered with variegated leaves, sweet. We're not Hawaii, but we definitely have the warmth for this one to take off.

I'm going to get a huge pot this summer after shooting- 30" x 40" and give it some more room. Since this is a 10 degree bamboo, once that pot is full, at least it won't have to be moved.

God I love this stuff. Two weeks after shooting, it's going on 7' already. The fresh yellow glow is so bright, with a hint of cayenne pepper spray to keep the squirrels off.

I was poking around the nigra 'bory' today and noticed a couple shoots barely above the soil line.

I saw the first Moso shoot yesterday evening. Shooting here has been slow.

Fargesia murielae shooting a lot. It upsized a bit and 'colonized' quite some space again.


Moso seedlings started elongating their new branches and leaves started to grow again if they got interrupted by winter and survived - most of them didn't. Whip shoots from last autumn started to wake up. Some of them seemed dead, because all of the sudden, they stopped growing last year, with temperatures still around 25C. Now, all black and presumed dead shoots started to green up and rise above soil level.

The best Moso seedling now looks like this:

It got hit by winter, it's pot still offers protection to mice or voles with gigantic hole in it, got broken by heavy wet snow and it's growing nicely. It will start by growing several whips from last year and a whole bunch of branches. Every existing culm is going to make at least 4 branches as it now seems. No real spring shoots are yet visible, but I expect it to upsize. Due to prolonged cold this winter, I'm sure it will explode soon, because temperature rised finally and today it got all the way up to 26C.

Borinda fungosa, or any other of my bamboos had not shown any shoots yet. Borinda lost most of it's culms because of wet snow and the nodes below the breakage started to grow again. All the shoots that were started in late summer are completely toasted, all older culms that are tied to the ground are still alive and starting to grow leaves again. Hopefully shoots emerge soon and I hope it upsizes even with all that winter damage.

Phyllostachys kwangsiensis , old Gen is putting up larger shoots than the last three years . It did not flower last year and has 1/3 inch shoots this year. Perhaps it will grow back to Timber size with time. It's in a 25 Gallon pot at the moment.

New generation kwangs are no slouches either. Sown in September, sprouted October, potted in 2 gallon pots last month. They looked horrible until they got into larger pots laced with nutrients. Will photograph in July.

The Chusqueas are really strange plants, even small ones have masses of branchlets. Still sprouting weekly since a September sowing. Aisan II doing the same from a Febraury sowing.
