I noticed Borinda fungosa shoot. I'm not sure if it's new or old - active or dormant. It does look like it's going to be larger than last year's shoots (~1 cm diameter) though.
Plant looks quite bad. It did not freeze because I've brought it inside, it started to branch out and after that all of a sudden, leafs and branches started going dry. It lost 3/4 of leaves and it looks just like last year when it got frozen. It's possible that it got maltreated when I wasn't around and when that happened. Hopefully this shoot starts growing and bamboo restarts vigorously into 2013. BTW, it got huge and I can hardly move it around. It's more than 2 m tall and culms got to around 1cm thick. I trimmed it heavily now.

Moso (in the ground) is starting to put up shoots in south Alabama. I noticed 2 shoots this morning, the tallest is about 20". They should really get going this week with weather hitting 70 degrees.Image Image

Rick,

It looks like your moso has matured enough to the point where it has on and off years given that you are only getting a few shoots that don't appear any bigger than your largest existing culms.

If nothing else comes up this year, I bet those shoot buds under there will keep on maturing, and you might see 2 years worth of gains by the spring of next year. My moso bicolor started out as a division so it already seems to be on the on/off cycle where this coming spring should be the explosive year.

Last year, it put up a few shoots, then the major flush came a couple of weeks later. I guess I'll find out soon. We got a lot of rain last month, so I'm hoping everything starts poping soon. It's due for some upsizing, I've been disappointed with the size so far.

What a difference a few days make. Moso shoots are popping up everywhere, and I'm finally getting some upsizing, these new shoots will be much larger than my shoots from last year.Image Image

Ph. vivax 'Aureocaulis' a little bit to early. We had 18°C few weeks before the cold front.

As shown by my post exactly 1 year ago, shoots outside on multiple bamboos were already coming out, and they somehow managed to survive all the freezes afterwards as my frost cloths seemed to be effective when it only dropped a few degrees below freezing.

One thing about shoots is that they do seem to lose all of their hardiness once they are over 1ft tall, and no longer have their coat of protective sheathes on them, especially when there is green culm showing.

Kbadams, seeing how far along your shoots are, I think you are probably hoping that you don't get any frosts in the next few days as the northeast won't be the only place with way below average temperatures.
