RE: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
Finally the first shoots of the year.
Pleioblastus viridistriatus
I expect to start seeing more shoots now that the temperatures are now in the 60s and the soil temps are above 45*F.

I knew there was a reason I check my plants for shoots at least twice a day: Phy. aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' has its first shoot poking up, and it wasn't there this morning!

Brachystachyum densiflorum has put up a shoot.
The weather should be triggering more shoots this weekend.

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
I was rather surprised today to find this shoot!
Other plantings of the species had already started to put up shoots, but this one really surprised me! Attachments are of the older top killed culms and of the new shoot.

P nigra shooting, but only one shoot poking up so far and less than half the size of last year's. This plant lost about 50% of its foliage during the winter and may have been knocked back more than I suspect.

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
I don't think so. I've had plantings completely defoliated that have sized up in the Spring and your planting only lost 50% of the foliage.va_highlander wrote:P nigra shooting, but only one shoot poking up so far and less than half the size of last year's. How old was that plant, and of what type? That's encouraging - I've got a couple that look like that I figured were done for. Maybe shoots will come soon...foxd wrote:I was rather surprised today to find this shoot!

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
It is a three year old MOSO seedling. I'm hoping it has enough energy stored in the rhizomes for the shoot to survive. I still have one MOSO seedling that has not yet put up a shoot.Matt in TN wrote:How old was that plant, and of what type? I still have a bunch of Phyllostachys that have not put up shoots yet. Shooting this year seems to be stretched out over a longer period.

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
I saw 2 Phy auerosulcata spectabilis shoots today and a couple more from Far denudata.
Most of my bamboos are leafing out from dead looking culms. Vivax, aurea and decora are the exceptions.
PS- I like the new look!
