Need help with I.D. Medium sized runner

Post by tallgrass »

I'm trying to I.D. a grove of bamboo. It's a running timber, in Northern Ca. it grows to about 35 feet tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. The mature grove is open and you can walk through it. Mature culms have all the branching on the upper third, and are very strong. I have some planted that I got 2 years ago Here is a pic of this springs shoots, they are about 1 inch in diam. It looks somewhat like Phy. Aurea, but there are no compressed nodes at all. Any Ideas? Image

These are some of this years shoots/culms. I talked to the person that has the parent grove ,and he assured me again that there are no compressed nodes at all. The grove is approx. 30 yrs old. Image

Philippe,

I think you may have nailed it with your first link. Aurea 'Takemurai' fits the description. Thanks for your help

Unless that was a common species 30 years ago in your area, that seems unlikely. Can anyone compare it to Phy meyerii? Can you get a photo of the nodes on some small culms?

Brad, My first thought was Phy. Meyerii, but as I researched the photos of shoots and all the descriptions I could find, the 'Takemurai' was what I thought was the closest fit. I really need to know for sure however before I put a tag on it. I would like to see a good photo of 'Meyerii' shoots. Also this bamboo shoots at the same time as my 'Aurea'. I'm still open. As far as species in the area, a freind here has a Mature grove of Phy. Vivax 'Mclure' and we're still trying to find out how it got here, and from where. Does anyone know of any other groves? Thanks, I need all the help I can get. Hank.

If not aurea for certain, then perhaps Flexuosa which is both aurea-like and glauca-like in terms of shoot leaves?
