newbie growing bamboo
I am a newbie, and ordered some seeds from ebay. Once the seed become seedlings, how long should I wait before transplanting outside? I live in Western Pa. I just hope I can get the seeds to become seedlings.

I don't know either, but last year I planted out Phyllostachys heteroclada seedlings after they were 3 months old. Another method would be to keep them in containers for the entire first year. I mainly was interested to see if I could get winter to weed out my weakest, least hardy strains.

archerobx,
I would make plans now to grow them in pots and overwinter indoors. 99.9% probably would not survive our winters. If you check out our heteroclada seedling post, you'll see that quite a few of us started waterboo. Mine is around the 5-6 inch mark now. Some are going outside soon. I plan on keeping the best 3 or so and giving away/trading the rest before they need brought in.

I live near monroeville.
I looked at that post, and thats why I decided to grow from seed. I live on a farm and was looking to someday have a nice grove. The hardest seeds I could find I bought. So do you think 1 winter in pots and then I can plant outside? I see that fargesia murieliae and nitida and phyllostachys nuda are good to -20. I will probably buy them as seedlings.

archerobx,
Should be good with one year indoors.
If you want to venture to my neck of the woods, I could give you a small aureosulcata division and rubromarginata rhizomes (from David) that are shooting now. I could also give you a heteroclada seedling or two, so you know what to expect out of yours. You could also take a look at what to expect for the next few years. If anything, you may be worse off with the wind in Monroeville.

I live on a farm in Boquet near monroeville but no one knows where it is. Do you have a nursery or is this a hobbie of yours? I would be interested. Are you looking for chinese chestnut seedlings or norway spruce seedlings about 18in? Thats all I got to trade. I have tobacco seeds, they grew real nice but I mest up on the curing part.

Not to dash your hopes but Moso won't fair well in PA. Check out the extensive pics and info on Moso at the Lewis Bamboo website.

I just happen to have a picture...

These are one year old. I'll know pretty soon how they did. Some are still green which is a good sign. I'm just hoping to get lucky with one good performer.

Forget Moso...unless you can protect it from old man winter....I'd show you a pic of mine but think of a toothpick...thats it...same color too...I shouldn't say forget it but isn't a best choice for us cold zone people
RE: newbie growing bamboo
any recommendations then. I see that Fargesia Murieliae and Nitida and Phyllostachys Nuda are good to -20. I thought Moso was good to -10. Anyway they were the only seeds I could find

RE: newbie growing bamboo
I'm sorry I think i might have missed something...you want to grow from seed?? whoops my fault....there are some seeds available from diff sp. Kudzu has some experience growing.from seed..He is in a better climate than us though. Moso is supposed to be good til -10 but i think its early shooting makes it difficult for us....I originally thought it would be ok for me but it wasn't.
RE: newbie growing bamboo
Hi archerobox, I live outside of Greensburg Pa. I've been growing heteroclada seeds with a great deal of success. How they will do come next winter I'll find out then. Growing from seed is a fun way to learn and try your own way's of growing. You will find all the info you need from the good people here on the web. If your looking for heteroclada seeds, I know where you can get some for the price of a postage stamp, people here like to share. email me if your interested.
