Just picked up the newest bamboo for my collection this year. I figured I would start earlier in the season as opposed to waiting too long.
So far I picked up two Bambusa Lako. One for the ground and the other to propagate with.
I also found this guy who has a large tree farm and has been growing bamboo for years. I picked up a thirty gallon container of Thyrsostachys siamensis (monastery bamboo). It was a little neglected (root bound in a 30 gal. - had a little cold damage) but I got it for basically nothing. Also, picked up a 30 gal Guadua angustifolia - also basically for nothing.
I also will be picking up a Bambusa pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus' in a 100 gal. container. The culms from last year are at least 25' tall. Unfortunately, they died back from the cold. But the root system is huge and doing well. It has already started putting up new shoots. I figure its worth it even if I have to nurse it back to health. I'm sure its root bound. So I'll try to divide it up to more manageable sizes. BTW, its a steal for what I got it for. He has over 100 of the 100 gal. pots. I might get more than one.
Does anyone have any idea of what a 100 gal. Bambusa pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus' is worth? - Out of curiosity
This year is starting off on the right foot.

Re: First new Bamboo this year!
It's worth what one person will pay you for it. For the people who buy from me, I would have to go through thousands of people before I would find one who wanted to buy it and then I would have to figure out how to haul it to their place. Now personally, a 100 gal pot, if I could actually lift and handle it by myself (which I probably couldn't) would be worth to me how many divisions into smaller pots I could divide the 100 gal. pot. And I have bought some like that before and "subdivided", but never a 100 gal. pot. How much does a 100 gal pot of bamboo weight?nu2bamboo wrote:Just picked up the newest bamboo for my collection this year. Re: First new Bamboo this year!
Roy,
I have no idea what the 100 gal. weights. All I know is that I could barely handle the 30 gal. pots myself. I had to use my riding lawn mower to drag the pot from the front to the back yard. If I can't move the 100 gal. pot then I will have to ask my neighbor to give me a hand. The guy did mention that it would take the four of us to put it in the bed of my truck. He has two guys that help him on his farm. I figured instead of dealing with a 3 gal lpot of Sunburst, I could just plant the 100 gal. pot for my yard. I bought the 100 gal pot for about what I would normally pay for a 5 gal. pot. Couldn't pass up that deal.
Any ideas on how to move a 100 gal pot? Without a fork lift?

And that works out great for you as the customer, but for the seller (which is what I was putting myself) it showed that he was practically having to give the bamboo away because of the large size pots. Now, if his clientèle were the type that sent someone else to do the shopping, hauling, and planting, then the large pots would be great and would fetch a marvelous price.nu2bamboo wrote:Roy,

Re: First new Bamboo this year!
I am sure that normally he sells the large pots of bamboo for much more than what I paid for them. Not only are the plants way to big for the pots and root bound, he sustained pretty bad cold damage to most of his bamboo. I don't think the typical bamboo buyer would look at the scragly bamboo and be willing to spend $100 bucks. I guess I know that since there was not root damage, this summer the bamboo will rebound significantly and will definately be worth what I spent. Especially the monastery bamboo. Once that gets going again that is a spectactular bamboo.
The only problem I have is with the Guadua. I will have to bring that in and out every year if I don't want it to freeze. I probably had a least a dozen or so days that went below 30 deg.
Anybody want a deal on a 30 gal. Guadua?
