A while back I was looking for any differences between Bambusa 'Hirose' and Old hammii and in my unscientific and very brief observational mulling over them I concluded they look alike.

I would think with a few more years of growth here on the mainland, they will be large enough that we should be able to see some differences or see if it can do what it does in Hawaii. I hope so! Some say it might be that it is just the volcanic soil and great weather, it will be interesting for sure.

Here are photos of a young culm of Bambusa 'Hirose'.

Thanks for the pictures! Oldhamii and Hirose were the same price where I ordered from. So I figured 'what the heck'.

I understand 'Hirose' came from a seed or something that would make it different so one would think there should be some differences. One thing for sure is that the photos of it in Hawaii are truly amazing.

I would imagine that the old age of the clumps there combined with Hawaii's growing conditions certainly have at least a little something to do with how spectacular they are.
