I sprayed mine off with the hose sprayer set on a strong stream. It took a while but most of the sooty came off. I picked some off by hand too. Without the bug poop to fuel it, it should eventually fade on it's own though. For some reason the B. multiplexes seem to really get it bad.

The bayer systemic will actually kill the aphids that leave behind the stuff the causes the black sooty mold. Once the pests are gone you should be able to spray off the mold.
Someday maybe I'll find a bamboo my wife likes...in the meantime I'll keep planting more!

RE: bayer vs sooty mold
I had a bad case of mold in my greenhouse in 2006. I planted some of the plants that fall and the sooty mold stayed forever. Now I didnt try to wash it off, so thats probably why... ha!
Now that I think about it...I think the culms never washed off in the rain either...so perhaps some washing and scrubbing is at hand...

the alphonse karr is not too bad. the mold is mostly in the branch complex.
but my silverstripe is so bad ive thought about mowing it down. b4 the culms are fully grown theyre discolored and ugly. and spray from the hose doesnt work.
