Re: Boo shoots for 2013
Found nicely upsized 'Spectabilis' shoots this morning!
Where does P. glauca 'Yunzhu' fall in the shooting cycle? I have a one culm division that I planted in '09. It has never put up new shoots. I call it my 'bamboo in a coma". The culm is looking ratty and losing foliage. It would be nice if it actually shoots this year.

If it hasn't done anything since '09 that makes me think there aren't any viable rhizome buds in the division. I think they call that a 'living stick'.Jeff: Igor's Apprentice wrote:Where does P. glauca 'Yunzhu' fall in the shooting cycle? I have a one culm division that I planted in '09. Phyllostachys Nigra shooting 4-6 weeks earlier than previous years.
Re: Boo shoots for 2013
JWH, what type of P. nigra is that in your picture? Is that usual for your nigra to shoot green?
Mine always come up with the more typical, almost tan culm sheaths.

Yeah mine usually have a more purple/wine color to them. This years shoots also look smaller. I did thin it out pretty agressively last year since so many culm were flopping over and it was very crowded in the center of the clump, maybe I stunted it?Samajax wrote:JWH, what type of P. nigra is that in your picture? Re: Boo shoots for 2013
JHW, your nigra is around 1 year ahead in development compared to mine, and one thing I've found is that nigra does not upsize nor spread very fast in comparison to most other phyllostachys.
I know mine was thinned out too last summer so hopefully that doesn't mean it will end up downsizing. Mine has culms averaging close to 7ft so far, and I'm hoping for 10ft with new shoots this year.

Re: Boo shoots for 2013
Rick, how big in diameter did these end up getting?
If I recall correctly, your seedling is likely 6 years old and going on its 7th growing season right?
I do remember that your shoots only looked around the 1/2 inch mark back in 2009 based on your photos so they have come a pretty long way. I'm a bit surprised that you would have shoots that started emerging so early in the season this year.

Re: Boo shoots for 2013
Nothing yet this year! Kinda nervous. The plants are about 5-6 years old and this time last year we have tons of shoots. It has been colder this year~not freezing, just not warming up like in years past. Those MOSAs look amazing. I want Mosa.

It looks like the rhizomes/whip shoots inside the greenhouse on bicolor that stopped growing last fall are still looking pretty good. I took off the greenhouse because we are finally warming up, and have plenty of rain in the forecast as well.

Re: Boo shoots for 2013
Phyllostachys Rubromarginata has been shooting for awhile and I missed it! Love the color on this shoot! This plant likes to put up shoots all spring and summer here. Hopefully it sent out rhizomes last year and will be a rampant runner in my cooler climate.
Re: Boo shoots for 2013
First Phyllostachys today, aureosulcata. 4 days ahead of date of damaging freeze last year. Weather forecast calling for 30F Saturday night.
Re: Boo shoots for 2013
Found a moso shoot yesterday. It looks like it will size up nicely compared to last year, if I can keep it from being eaten.
Re: Boo shoots for 2013
One week later. You can see about 5 new shoots with good upsize in this shot alone.
