When does Arundinaria gigantea shoot?

Post by Eric Layton »

My Phyllostachys are shooting away full bore now, most slowing down, Decora just starting. When can I expect shoots from Arundinaria? No signs of new life yet. Eric

My Macon clone started shooting last week.

I think it's true that "a watched bamboo never shoots".

I found the first shoot of A. gigantea back on 4/27 and have been seeing progressively larger shoots emerge ever since.

At this point all my outside bamboos have put up shoots except for my Fargesia nitida.

First Shoot Seen 6/13/06

Post by Eric Layton »

I was out weeding around the bamboos on the hill below our yard and lo and behold! the first shoot of A. g. has popped up out of the ground. Much later than I expected, of course this is the first species of Arundinaria that I have and was comparing it to Phyllostachys. The location is shaded most of the day by a large maple and may contribute to its slow start. The existing culms have re-leafed nicely and the whole plant looks green and vigorous. When the shoot gets a little more visible I will post a photo.

My 'Kentucky Black' Arundinaria just sent up its 1st shoot. Still waiting on 2 other Rivercane cultivars. 'Hoosier Strain' is still lurking beneath the soil.

Mine put up a bunch of small shoots starting a couple of months ago and now is putting up larger shoots. The fact that it has been relatively cool this spring seems to have delayed things. Many of my bamboos are still putting out leaves. On the bright side, they are much larger this year.

'Hoosier Strain' Rivercane sent its 1st shoot today. Current temperature is 92F/33C. I guess it was waiting for summer. :toothy4:

Some immature plants have sent up small culms, but the big guys haven't woken up yet :D

I have planted some A. g. tecta that just recently started to shoot heavily with one or two shoots reaching about 5 feet, the entire plant is more than six feet tall but leans all around. It has been in the ground for 2-3 years and is very big and bushy, so far it more of a clumper.

I planted it in a "wild" area here in NJ, where the ground is always moist and often wet, 100 feet from a river, in flood plain- it floods every time it rains. [There is 10 foot tall Japanese Knotweed there.] This was a kind of experiment, started w/ a 3 gallon from mail-order. It looks really nice (much better than sometimes stated) but I wish that it has run more than clump, spreading barely 6 inches since planting.

1-Does anyone know if over time it will turn more into a runner?
2-Has anyone every heard of it rooting from culms? Just a hypothesis that it would.

gigantea still hasn't put up any shoots yet perhaps due to the drought conditions.

Not sure about tecta, but gigantea will root from culm nodes.

My A. gigantea (from a division Needmore sent last year) started shooting in late June, but just a couple shoots because it's a young division and the winter wind blasted the leaves. The plant had to re-leaf first, and that probably set it back a few weeks.
