Re: Boo shoots for 2012
So far not a lot of shoots on most species, though I did find some Moso shoots last night. One thing I noted was that the only bamboo that got top killed was the Bambusa ventricosa.
Southern Indiana.
My Bamboo List.
The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

Re: Boo shoots for 2012
When I removed pine bark mulch a bit, I noticed large numbers of shoots poking out all around Fargesia Murielae I've planted last April.

First photo is from SW side of the clump and the second from NE side. The shoots on first picture, so it seems at the moment, are noticeably smaller and they seem to grow packed. Behind in always shaded part (soil and mulch pile is totally shaded by bamboo itself and nearby growing forsitia) of the plant, there are thicker shoots with more space around them. Can that be related to soil temperature?
The soil on first picture heats up at least a bit more, especially during the summer. Perhaps the clump grows larger shoots in shaded area, so it can poke out and get more light. The sun exposed side of the clump on the other hand, doesn't need to grow tall to get a lot of light - bamboo just explodes with lots of smaller shoots.
Can't wait to see the shoots grow. Hopefully weather will stay warm

Re: Boo shoots for 2012
It looks like many of the earliest shooters are already starting to shoot, even the ones in the ground now. There's supposed to be a freeze monday night of 27F so I might have to cover some of them up.

I've now got rubromarginata coming up and I have seen my first large shoot of golden. There are some small shoots coming up on the edge of the grove. If we would get some rain I bet everything here would go nuts.
Re: Boo shoots for 2012
This past week I got shoots from
P. aureosulcata,
aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis,
aureosulcata Spectabilis,
Phyllostachys bissetii,
Pleioblastus humilis
Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata',
Indocalamus tessellatus,
Pleioblastus viridistriatus,
and one unknown that I believe will be Vivax although the other one I have that might be Vivax isn't shooting yet.

Re: Boo shoots for 2012
I brushed the mulch away from my Aureosulcata 'Harbin' and found a shoot 1" out of the soil. We're supposed to get down into the 20's tonight and almost that cold tomorrow night! The last couple weeks were 70's and 80's so I'm not surpized. Luckly I had just been working in the garage and had some nice mulch-sized chips of wood that I swept in a pile and had yet to bag up. They are not serving as extra mulch to protect the shoot if it gets too cold tonight.

Re: Boo shoots for 2012
Green vivax is shooting
More shoots appearing daily on the aureosulcatas, can't even count them now!
That one huge moso 'Anderson' shoot is about 8 feet with no signs of slowing down. Another Anderson division taken at the same time has a similiar shoot now.
