Boo Shoots for 2010

Yellow Groove shooting April 19, 2010. Planted two small 3/8 - 1/2 " by 7- 9 ft culms with 2 ft rhizome in Sept. 2009. Got 3 whip shoots a month after planting but the rabbits ate them in the winter. I now have 4 new shoots right now with one looking close to 5/8 " by about 5 ".

First bissetii shoots are poking out on the south side of the bed. Nothing nearly the size of the first Spectabilis shoots.

I watered a couple of days ago and may have to again this weekend. It has veen a dry couple of months.

The first of the P. Nigra shoots poked their heads out yesterday (4-20-10). I was relieved as this Nigra hadn't been looking too well...

I seem to be in a lull in terms of new bamboos shooting, but I expect the P. parvifolia to start shooting any day since it is producing an incredible number of new leaf buds all over.

Found a shoot this morning of my in ground Vivax 'Huangwenshu'. I was definitly pleased to see this because it is going through some major leaf drop and hasn't looked too good since I planted it about 1.5 months ago.

It's been nice and sunny here the last 2 weeks with no rain at all, the nights are still cold with the occasional light frost though.

So I was looking at my clumping Bamboo, no idea what kind of species it is but we've had it for about 2 years now.
We had 2 plants but one died during the winter and my dad split up the plant and now it has become 2.
We overwintered it with a lot of that coco peat and coco mulch (from the blocks) and I gave it a bit of protection during the winter by attaching a clear shower curtain against my fence and pegging it onto the ground. It stayed green all winter! (Zone 6)

I was very surprised at how thick the shoots were! I can't wait to see how tall it gets this summer.

Anyone here possibly know what species it is?

Here my sasa veitchii is the only one that has started shooting and it's just a tiny shoot. It's in a pot too.

Moso: These don't really look like true shoots, but that's all I'm getting so far. They're smaller than the largest existing culms and there's 10-20 of them.


F Rufa: These shoots should get taller than the tallest ones from last fall.


Yellow groove: This is the largest shoot so far this year, well above 1/2 inch in diameter, about the same size as the original culms from the division.


This giant lily went from 1/3 inch in diameter last year up to 1 inch measured by caliper this year. Imagine what it can do in a couple years. It's supposed to have potential to get above 8 feet in height without staking.


I'm looking forward to seeing real shoots on my moso, and for my parvifolia & dulcis to finally show something.

The small S. yashadake Kimmei I got from Gene last year was planted in a 7 gal pot and sent a runner out the bottom that put up 4 shoots; the furtherest away was 4ft from the pot.
