2009 Boo Shooting Diary

Rick -- you posted that you got 6"+ of rain a week or two ago, now again?! Yikes. Is that a normal Spring for you?

Not quite normal. We get some heavy rains on occasion, not counting hurricanes and tropical storms; the heaviest was a couple of years ago that dumped 12" in a 24hr period. The Mobile area has the highest rainfall of any place in the continental US, but these last 2 fronts have been really wicked. Last time it was a stalled front that kept dumping on us; and this time it's a system with 3 fronts, back to back, with the last one coming through tonight. The weather man said we could expect up to 9" of rain over the 3 days. The front that came through this morning was a tornadic front that caused a good bit of damage on the other side of the bay.

Makes for a lot of mud at my place and soggy ground for a week or two. The ground's so wet that I noticed masses of earth worms in the running water when I fed the horses this morning.

Phy. aureosulcata 'Spectablis' has its first two nice fat shoots today.

Putting up shoots in a pot doesn't really count, so I'll wait for the Summer rains, heat, and humidity for my tropicals to start shooting.

A few of my tropicals are currently shooting now Roy, then again they are probably survival shoots after the horrendous, freezing winter we had
All of my runners are currently shooting with the exception of my Madake...but I expect it to start any time now. I am really seeing why they are called "runners"....I just removed and replanted some of my rubro that went about 15 feet from their mother!

Moso, Ph. Violascens, and Ph. Aureosulcata Spectabilis shooting in Chico California, Violescens was probably 3 weeks ago, as the shoots are 3 feet tall already. 3/27/2009
None of the other 20 varieties are shooting yet in Chico. All are in the grond for a year+.

A few more on the move:
Fargesia scabrida
Fargesia murieliae 'Simba'
Yushania ferax (prev fargesia)

The scabrida are a few inches high so just mustn't have noticed them amongst the leaf litter.

Aside from starting to put up shoots, the Pleioblastus shibuyanus 'Tsuboi' did not get top killed and is putting out new leaves all over.

I also noticed that the Semiarundinaria okuboi has a single leafbud emerging near the top of one of its culms. Can I count it as not top-killed based on a technicality?

Fargesia Rufa has started to poke through! Finally, I can get in on the act!!
I've got quite a few phyllos roaming free and I'm really interested to see where they get to this year. I've also got a willow in between the vivax and humilis and the anticipation with that is killing me. Kinda like Alien vs Predator.
