Nice new species

I added Phyllostachys prominens to my import list a couple of years back after seeing a picture of a distant grove in China, just a beautiful form. Jos VDP had it in-ground and it was very pretty, not much larger than some of my plants. He said it was hardy to a bit below zero, so I brought some back assuming that it would perhaps make it to an inch or so in diameter in my/his winters. Phy. prominens is the first picture. Makes me glad to have this one in the US after seeing these shoots leap up in size for him. Might be able to get one ready for the ABS auction in a year or so to get it out there in the US, I have 2 small ones doing well in containers.

Hi Brad. Cool bamboo...has some similarities to dulcis, to my eye.

The overall form reminded me of an upright Henon. I see where Adam must have divided his and is donating a plant for this upcoming auction so there is a chance for this bamboo to spread a bit.

Hi Brad, I've sort of given up on "just another green Phyllostachys" with the new Borinda and such sort of taking over, do you reckon it's worth trying out. Any pics from your plant..

Mark, mine is too small for photos to show much but that one of Jos' is encouraging given his climate. Since I can't grow the montane species another green Phyllostachys with size & form potential here is desirable.

Do you have a link to that pic the link above only shows jos's home page. The trouble with Phyllostachys here is they struggle to mature and hence show any difference, most really struggle here and to be honest just look the same. But the climate is so different here, we've just had the second day above 25c this year Most days this 'summer' have been 20c, cloudy and wet. New shoots on Phyllostachys viridis are around half height, about 8 foot tall at the mo~ looks like their gonna struggle to leaf out before the first frosts in Oct.

Hi Brad,

I am in Kentucky and want to take my dad to your place to pick up some bamboo for an area near Ft. Knox. Which one will grow best... fairly quick... and of course large for this area. AND what are your hours for Thursday or Friday of this week?

My mother just passed away. My dad always loved and kind of plant. He has bananas, papayas, Habanero peppers, and lots of other things from down our way. I told him we would pay you a visit and pick up some bamboo and get him on the forums. It would be very therapeutic for him.

Hi Brad,

Just heard about Hurricane Felix. I may have to cut my visit short and get back down to Harlingen. Felix is already a category 5. I should fly out on Thursday. I'll see if he wants to go on Wednesday.
