Quick question. Can a non-ABS member bid? As you know I'm new to bamboo, and haven't become an ABS member yet, but would like to help the cause. I will send in my membership application on Monday, but I'm not sure if it'll be processed by the time the on-line auction ends.

If I can bid, that B. lako is coming to Sugar Land

Thanks,
Mike.

I don't think you have to be a ABS member to bid. I didn't see it in the rules. I think ABS is interested in getting the most greenbacks it can from the auction.

I searched the rules as well, and didn't find anything pertaining to members/non-members, so I registered.

Off I go to bid :D

I'm getting a little nervous because the bid on the B. Lako is getting higher.

Just kidding, we are no where near my max bid Image

Also the vivax huanwenzhu is not too far behind.

I think the Internet auction plan is going over quite well. If ABS National Conference was being held somewhere in the eastern and lower 48 States, then I think there would have been more plants up for auction/donated. Hopefully we will have the Internet auction for all subsequent ABS National Conference auctions.

When the ABS convention comes my way next year, I plan to donate some nice bamboos that I am working on right now. Who knows, one may even be ... you'll just have to wait...

Roy, I know that Bill had great difficulty in obtaining donated plants. I had nothing mail-order size at all to donate and I know of some other usual benefactors who will not or can not ship plants so it will be interesting to see if this is the wave of future auctions or the 1 & only internet auction.

Brad,

Even if the ABS has the plants at a central location, most likely at the place where the conference is being held, an Internet bidding process should be used on the plants that are shippable size. If this is the main fund raiser for ABS each year, and I'm sure the ABS would like top dollar for the donated plants, then perhaps as part of the hosting process, the local chapter would also be responsible for shipping the shippable plants at cost. I think shipping is the biggest obstacle to the whole Internet bidding process.

Like Kyuzo (pictured above) in "The Seven Samurai," I've "...Killed (more than) two..." bamboos.

There are 22 plants so far but there are bids on only 18 of them. I am waiting on information on three more bamboos.
