Those are some interesting markings. The graffiti shows it's possible to even make a bamboo-o'-lantern. I imagine the years could be scratched into the culms near their base to graph a spread track, or help pick the best culms for construction. Where's that grove located?

Eastlandia,

Do you mean that one half of the new shoots died or half of the clump's culms died?

The grove is in Selby Botanical Gardens...well, they have 2 groves. (Sarasota Florida)
Half of a 2006 shoot, i can tell from its color, has turned brown and died. The other half is still living... its the third picture. middle culm is half and half. -eastlandia

When I looked at your image, I though it showed a 2 inch green culm and another light tan dead culm in the background behind it. Now I see that there is only one culm showing the half and half you indicated. I have no idea what caused it, but sometimes when a new shoot is broken off by perhaps wind damage, then you can sometimes see something like that, but I would have to say that it is somewhat rare.

I have been of the belief that if you get caught carving on a living object that you should be tatooed with the scientific (taxonomic) name of the object you were carving.
