I was browsing through Flikr and came across this shot. Anyone got a plant bigger than this?

That's a big one all right. Makes mine look like a 'trial size' bamboo!

Mine is a trial size but is putting up extra-large shoots this year. It may make the jump from two foot tall to six.

RE: XL Fargesia rufa
Funny you should mention large Rufa.
Last weekend I got a Rufa that is said to grow much larger that the TC plants that are in the US. It came to the US originally from Mike Bell and the division that I received has culms 3/16" in diameter and 5 feet tall. Hopefully it will turn out to be hardy and big.

It's possible there is more than one plant there no?

It's possible, but I suspect that the sizes we are seeing are the typical sizes, just that they are growing under different conditions. My F. rufa is planted where it gets a lot of noon sun which may have something to do with its rapid size-up. I doubt that there was anything special about where it came from. For all I know it might be a TC plant.JohnC wrote:It's possible there is more than one plant there no?

Interesting. My rufa gets a lot of sun too, and I thought that may be the reason for its shorter stature. My F. rufa is planted where it gets a lot of noon sun which may have something to do with its rapid size-up

How long has your rufa been in the ground? Mine didn't size up any last year, but this year looks like it is going to make up for lost time.Alan_L wrote:Interesting. Planted Spring '06. Lost all Spring shoots in '07 due to freeze. It's widening nicely, just not putting on the height. We'll see when these new shoots are done, as they are thicker than any I've seen on this plant yet.
Currently: 16" wide at the base, 48" wide at the leaf tips, 32" tall (measured in the middle). Way too many culms to count (pretty much a solid mass of culms).

My rufa is not nearly as big as yours, about two foot tall. It also has pretty much a solid mass of culms, but this year the new shoots seem much more spread out.Alan_L wrote:Currently: 16" wide at the base, 48" wide at the leaf tips, 32" tall (measured in the middle). RE: XL Fargesia rufa
I'm wondering how this plant gets taller at all. Since there are so many culms in the middle, and they're the thinner, older ones, will it eventually start shooting in the middle again? Most or all of the new shoots are on the outer edge, and those culms all end up bending outward.
Of course, it's easier to see the perimeter shoots, so maybe there are some in there in the middle. I'll give an update in a week or two since the shoots are currently just starting to rise above the existing foliage.
