Dendrocalamus giganteus flowering

Post by philinshelton »

I was at Quail Botanical Garden over the weekend, and got a great guided tour of the bamboo while I was there. We noticed several of the bamboos that were flowering, I think all were genus Dendrocalamus, but not for positive on that. Lots of stresses on the bamboos there, including high salts in the irrigation, smoke from recent fires, and winter temps that routinely cause severe foliar damage. So, could be normal cycles of flowering, or environmentally induced. Got a pic of flowering D. giganteus

Phil,

I think Boonut also took some pics of D. giganteus flowering at Quail, but I haven't heard anyone say they actually saw any seeds from it. My Dendrocalamus minor 'Amoenus' flowers a good bit but produces no seeds.
