You're in a much different climate than me, so it will be interesting to compare what size mine gets to next year (year 4). I hope not quite as big as yours because mine is too close to a path. I'll definitely be taking divisions off the path side of it when I do.

I was at some local garden centers yesterday and checked out the big pots of rufa at some of them. These are 5 or 7 gal pots, and the existing culms are 3-4' tall already. (One of the reasons I was concerned about my plant staying so short.) Upon closer inspection, all of the new shoots in these pots were *tiny* -- much smaller than the shoots I'm getting now. So it appears to me that these plants at the garden center are only taller because they were divisions from a taller plant. So I'm no longer too worried about mine being a 'runt'.

You don't happen to have any photos of your rufa in year 3 do you?

Actually, that's a plant I installed for a customer, and I happened to be in the area and took that pic. Below is a link to a few pics showing 3 growing seasons of a plant in my yard. I have found that the more shade, the more upright this plant grows. In full sun, more squat and splayed. All of the Rufa in the pics I have posted are TC plants from boo-shoot gardens

Definitely likes your climate better than mine. I thought mine was doing quite well, but now I have to go give it a little pep talk.

Didn't help that I lost all my 2007 Spring shoots to a late freeze. Yeah, I'll blame it all on that.
