Pleioblastus fortunei (Dwarf Whitestripe) Blooming

Post by bambooweb »

While at Bamboo Garden last weekend Ned showed me the pots of P. fortunei that are in bloom. An interesting thing is only the plants that they produced from division are blooming and not the plants they bought from TC.

Does anyone else have P. fortunei in flower? Mine is not blooming but it is looking bad from the heat.

I have some 1 year old seedlings germinated from seeds a forum member sent me from from Arkansas I think - all solid green thus far, and 1 of my 20 divisions in the ground started flowering earlier this year. I have Pl. fortunei, F. nitida, F. murielae and B. tuldoides 'Ventricosa' flowering all at the same time. No seeds harvested.

I was just @ my parents yesterday, but did not look that close. I have two or 3 pots/divisions and they all have looked bad all year - the variegation is not what was last year - do you think since it is in more shade the "white" would be less and not as pronounced? I'll check again Sunday......

So, does P. fortunei survive flowering, or is it a goner?

Yo Phil, s'up? I planted about 20 pots close together a few years back and they have not yet fully closed the gaps between them, it looks like the one that flowered is dead, at least there are no live culms in that immediate area.
