RE: Hardy Cacti
Cady, et al., thanks for the info. I have a bunch of winter hardy cacti & succulents seed ordered along with some plants. So far the silly rabbit has left my iceplant garden alone but, he's been seen prowling the neighborhood.

You havent seen a silly rabbit until you've seen one that has gotten hold of some Trichocereus.

What about when homer said "silly rabbit, kicks are for ribs."
Ole homer, gotta love that character.

Looks great! Hope we get a picture next spring that proves it can be done. At least while things are small, it should be easy to create some type of cover. Do you plan to give special protection the first winter or so?

Like Kyuzo (pictured above) in "The Seven Samurai," I've "...Killed (more than) two..." bamboos.

Great collection "Cactus-Man-Formerly-Known-As-Thuja." What did you use as soil under the scree? A blend of sand and loam?

RE: Hardy Cacti
Right now it's just pea gravel and sand. I was afraid to mix any of the existing soil because it is so heavy. Also I thought about getting some crushed limestone to add but don't know if cacti would like high pH. Obviously I don't really know what I'm doing but just trying it out. I figure in this climate drainage might be the #1 requirement.
I'm not sure what I'll do over winter but the varieties I chose are supposed to take very cold and wet winter conditions. We'll see what happens.

nice efforts there Mike....I want to try some cati outside myself but probably not this year. Too many other projects this season already. I'll sit back and enjoy yours this year.

RE: Hardy Cacti
I've also been overwintering a few agave for a couple years that I originally intended for outside. I use the word "overwintering" loosely- it was more like bringing them inside and throwing them in a corner. I just didn't know where to put the bed and then expected to be moving, which I now have. I thought they would be among the coolest succulents to grow because of their size and the way they spread via underground runners (sound familiar?). But can you imagine walking barefoot thru the lawn and accidentally stepping on one of those things where you weren't expecting it!?!?!?!
