Is it more about the low temperatures or is it the cold winds that kill tropical clumpers? I think building a clear tent or something that will shield off all the winter temperatures will bring the temperature up above freezing even when its 0 degrees at night. It might also need insulating material...

I've got access to all the free mulch and manure I need so I'll be stacking 5 feet of mulch on top of my tropical clumper if I have to. Shouldn't the become more cold hardy as they get bigger? Tropical clumpers should be able to survive in a zone 5 or 6 given the ground temperature stays about 40degrees due to snow cover. It should get completely top killed but its worth a try. Probably no one has ever tried some species of tropical clumpers in the north considering how many species there...

I just ordered buddha belly, and dendrocalamus sinicus today to grow them indoors for the most part, but I'm also planning on trying my luck with growing them outsidein zone 6. Of course I'll get creative and try stuff like heavy mulching, blankets, insulating material, or build a heated greenhouse ...

Thats wierd because my area got down to 14F, and none of my bamboos show any sign of change other than they stop producing new leaves. I own Vivax, Moso, and Aerosulcata which all show no leaf burn. I know this should be to early to be reporting on damage from cold weather but after the cold snap a ...
