Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Well, speaking of the rubro, this afternoon while watering I noticed a shoot poking out! I guess that is testament to Lewis bamboo's plant quality. This went in the ground exactly 23 days ago, so I'm pumped. I added a bit of protection since I don't trust the wildlife (squirrels and chipmunks)

Re: SE Idaho, zone 5, what to grow?

Good to know that they should have similar hardiness as I got mine from source that sells both...and the varigated japonica I got from them is definitely not variegated...lol..so who knows what my bissetii is.

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Yeah my intention was to get the bissetii in ground with my rubromarginata and spectabilis that just got planted, but now I'm not going to move it till it finishes shooting. It went in that pot in July last year...so it's well established. Here's a shot of the other two in ground, and the bissetii w...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Something got into my bissetii last night...has to be mice since it was inside the garage..it chewed the two culm tips just poking up along the pot rim and the two closest to those. I dont think I'll loose any of them...but I don't know what kind of damage it take to make a plant want to abort a sho...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Is that an upsize after the damage or are the previous culms similar size? And another pic of my bissetii. I realize it's just a little guy compared to most but being through winter here, and my first Phyllostachys shoots, etc...I'm very excited. Two moreasons tips showed themselves along the pot ed...

Re: SE Idaho, zone 5, what to grow?

For what it's worth, after much reading, searching, and downloading of every bamboo related pdf I could find...I am trying rubromarginata, spectabilis, and bissetii in ground here in my zone 5...it'll be a small patch (3x12), of whichever, if any survive. The bissetii spent winter in its 4.5gal pot,...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Bummer...was hoping for first hand experience...lol, they sure resemble strawberry leaves. My "grove" will be pretty sparse for a while (maybe forever)...so they should get plenty of light.

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Wow...those atrovaginata shoots are BEAUTIFUL! What are youre winter temps like? And do I see strawberries as ground cover under the boo? If that is I'm curious how it works with the bamboo...my wife and I just did the same under our patch.

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

My japonica has been pushing up shoots while living inside for the winter. Over the last 2 months these have been slowly creeping up and now that it's been spending days outside they are finally taking off. There are 8 visible in this picture, and 1 more behind the pot rim in the foreground.

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

My bissetii with its first shoot's ever for me! There's 5 if you really look hard. The biggest is just barely 1/4", but it's bigger than the smallest of the original 3 culms. This was a 2 gal plant put in a 5 gal pot July of last year. It spent the winter buried in leaves and snow and seems to ...
