Re: Phy Propinqua ‘Beijing’ Flowering
Curious to know how this bamboo is doing for everyone? Did your bamboo survived flowering and recovered? Did you have viable seeds that sprouted? I thought mine was a goner. But, I found one weakly bamboo that grew where my Moso used to grow. This spot is also overrun by my black bamboo. At first I ...

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
Yeah... It's been about a decade since I got Atrovagina and Parvifolia from you. Spring/Summer 2012 as I remember. My Parvifolia managed to reach 15/16 feet several years ago at its max height before a harsh winter top killed it. It was reduced to about 1/3 in height after top kill. This past summer...

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
That is definitely true that energy spent releafing takes away from new shoots. So far in SE Texas 8B, the lowest temperatures have dipped into the low 20s which has managed to halt new leaf growth and stunt shoot growth but nowhere close to being cold enough to leaf burn temperate running bamboos....

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
I am ok with 100% leaf burn. Just hope it's not top kill, because that would be a set back for a couple of years growth.

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
Well, we just had about 10 inches of snow overnight.
It's a bit late, but hopefully not too late. The leaves have already curled for nearly a week.

A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
January has been a brutal month for my area. There's been little to no snow for insulation, and many brutally cold days and nights. I did just gave them a dose of warm/hot water, but I doubt it would help given the continuing low temperatures for the weeks ahead with no reprieve in sight.

Re: Bamboo variety advice please
There is way to get thick canes at limited height. Get large bamboo canes and top them off at the height you want. Two of my bamboo shoots snapped at 2 to 4 feet in height respectively (by who what, still mystery), but then I find them looking quite good. I think they'll look really nice in ceramic ...

Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?
It may have to do with the amount of precipitation.
Not sure about your place, but my area was particularly dry during month of May and early June.

Re: New to bamboo, already having problems
Is this a new plantation? If so, it's not a surprise. It may just be transplant shock as the roots have not adapted to the new soil. That said, I would reduce the watering to once every 2 to 3 days depending on how wet the soil is.

Re: New here
Growing bamboo is fun indeed because you don't know what next year's growth will be like. However, if you're zone pushers like me, be prepared for disappointments as well. I am in zone 5, and in most years, my bamboos are top killed and they can come back the same size or significantly downgraded. T...

Re: First Shoots of 2020
Parvifolia and Atrovaginata only put a handful of shoots this year. Is it because they put much of their energy into re-leafing instead? Anyone else observed this anomaly?

Re: First Shoots of 2020
My Moso went dead a couple of years ago after I failed to protect it for a few cold nights. However, my Nigra survived just fine, so Nigra is definitely more cold hardy, despite having the same hardiness rating.

Re: Dulcis Shoot - normal?
I'll provide a doom and gloom view amongst all the positive ones. That shoot doesn't look so good. A healthy shoot should feel hard and smooth looking. Best case scenario, some other shoots will emerge when the plant is ready. Worst case, it will become a living stick. I've had one where I planted a...

Re: vivax vs parvifolia
I do not have vivax, so can't comment much on it. With Parvifolia though, you need patience. You're probably not going to like the look of Parvifolia for the 4 or 5 years unless you have a large specimen to begin with. Young Parvifolias have the tendency to grow at an angle. Choose Parvifolia if you...

Re: Hardiness question (and website question)
I think you already have many of the top hardy ones.
Parvifolia slightly less hardy than aureosulcata but have the potential to grow larger, so long as it doesn't get top killed. As long as your winter doesn't go weeks of negative teens (Celsius) or lower, I think it would do ok.
