Actually that picture was taken near lake tahoe last july. I agree it probably is a rubber boa. I lived in california for the first 20 years of my life and that was only the second one Ive seen. Iowaboo, you only missed by about 10 miles! Not bad. Not to mention your probably the only person in Iowa...

Im cool with snakes, they seem to keep to themselves and do more good than harm. Although I found one sitting on the toilet tank one time and it was a pain trying to catch it. Apparently they dont like to be cornered.

Mud snake sounds like a good guess. It did kind of remind me of an earthworm.
