I think you'll be fine. All of my groves exist in acidic clay soil and half the year or more they are covered with decaying leaves. I use the fall leaves to help mulch for the wintertime.
And I think it depends on the species.... good point. : )

RE: Whipshoots: good or bad?
I believe I have mentioned this before (years ago) but I found that with excessive watering, more rhizomes whipped.

Oh, and here is a link to its location. I also realized that due to river flooding, the grove sits on top of about 12 feet of silt.

RE: Another Indiana A. Gigantea sp.
So, I'm pumped. I just witnessed the tallest/biggest diameter AG grove yet. Big, 1" to 1 1/2" culms and plenty of stunning new bushy culms from the past two years. It is located just south of Madison Indiana in Trimble County, KY. One person was so excited about the bamboo that I helped hi...

Oh, and speaking of river cane. I visited a monastery in southern Indiana and they had planted A. Gigantea along the creek through their farm land to prevent erosion.

In my personal thoughts, I think it is very hard for plants to be "invasive" if they never flower. Bamboo might be quick to spread, but compared to other invasive plants its just not that big of a deal.

Yeah Lance, I agree. I have a hard time not believing the positive correlation with the CO2 levels and global temperature because they can see similar trends in the past 100 years or more... but its going to take more than a few years for us to see major impacts. Sven, I forget where you live, but I...

New USDA map
I was reading the paper yesterday morning and found that the Indianapolis Star is claiming that the USDA will have to issue an "updated" version of the climate zone map due to global warming. Is this true and have other people heard about it? I believe in global warming, but I think they a...

I wish I had pictures, but the P. Aureosulcata grove near my college is exploding with 2" culms. Its amazing to see a species that normally doesn't have "large" culms size up. Maybe Ill sneak some pictures in tomorrow. :) Maybe I still underestimate bamboo, but temperate species in In...

Last year my first shoot occurred on March 27th. (P.A. 'Alata')...the year before that they were the 12 of April (also Alata). And the amazing thing is that they shot even after such a cold winter in 2007. This year was really warm so I'm with you Dan....it seems odd to not see shoots. maybe its the...

haha, I just saw one more thing:
how about getting rid of "agent orange" rather than bamboo??
I think that would help the environment out in the long-run.

RE: Bamboo article in the magazine of the Texas Electric Coo
Uh...when did anyone say that cutting bamboo culms 3 feet off the ground with a knife was the best containment method...and when did someone say that it would grow even faster if you did this? haha
