Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

dewdrops hanging out, hanging on new shoots I don't know for certain from just the pics but that might not be condensation but rather transpiration. Walking past a clump of Teddy Bear in the garden, aka Dendrocalamus brandisii for the purists among you, I was looking for any new sprouts--the other ...

enjoyed reading the fun responses. found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_carbide ...The earliest electrical application of SiC was in lightning arresters in electric power systems. .... When a lightning strike to the line raises the line voltage sufficiently, the SiC column will conduct, ...

Re: Bamboo and Lightning?

Recently two pines in my garden took a hit. Looks like one will survive but the other seems like will be woodpecker food. I had originally thought that once my taller boos grow, they'd take the hit instead of the pines. Some of the pines here are at about 55 ft tall, including the one hit, and I've ...

Re: Is this recommended bamboo application feasible????

Besides concern of the limited footprint noted already by others, which if you don't stay on top of--and maybe even if you do--it might displace some of those pavers, being right up against the house, I presume there might be some sort of eaves above the planting area? If so, then you don't really h...

Re: Dwarf Buddha Belly growth concerns

Nice planter but does look like it could heat up. Definitely mulch. Not a lot of green but pic is not very clear so I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Be careful of overwatering depending upon how well drained that planter might be. If it is of any consolation, my Buddha belly has yet to start sprout...

Re: Major Black bamboo flowering

My only experience with flowering to date is with Schizostachyum brachycladum Yellow Form aka Sacred Bali Bamboo which I grew for years when I had a garden in warmer climes (I attempted it here but lost it after a 2nd year's freeze). That one if I recall correctly flowered every year of maturity but...

Re: Zones

From seed I've no idea. I started with one culm about 1/4 to 1/2 inch diameter and maybe 12 ft tall. Guessing, was a few years back, summer 2009 I think. Then in winter 2009/10 this new garden experienced a 100-year freeze event. Got down to the low 20s. I had two culms by then. If I remember right ...

Here's the nana. But as I mentioned, you might have some top kill every few years or if lucky, once established, just some burn in 9a's coldest years.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

Suspecting by the ants nearby that Bambusa membranacea var. Striata was excreting some sort of sweetness I thought to cage my one and only sprout to protect it from any wayward squirrel that hawk failed to snack on. http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/zz207/clumper/IMG_7065_zpsb356e6d6.jpg And had an...
