Re: When will this bamboo hide my neighbor?
Yep Pioneer, right at 3k feet. Probably exact same conditions as you it sounds. Phyllos do great here and fargesia rufa is the only thing I've had success with other than that, and arrow seems to do awesome here too. (not from my 5 year experience but an old neighbor with a 25 year stand of hundreds...

Re: When will this bamboo hide my neighbor?
Thanks for the feedback guys. Why is it that everyone use 'zone 7' even at nurseries everywhere etc.? It makes sense that using the USDA zone is more specific but common parlance is always 'zone 7.' Also when reading nursery labels etc. don't they almost always use the sunset zone...If so then I wou...

When will this bamboo hide my neighbor?
Hello All, I've only grown bamboo for about 5 years so I lack the longterm experience many of you have. This back acre of my property has a neighbor right against my properly line (their house is pictured.) Nice folks but looking forward to only seeing green foliage and not their home and RV. I have...

Re: Phyllostachys n. Megurochiku flowering?
Oh boy, thankfully none of mine are, I have about 6 stands planted in the ground and 5 pots and none so far are. I'm also located near you in Amador so I hope the old voodoo doesn't spread this way!

Re: Replacing a small grove
friends or neighbors with a backhoe? it's a little far to trailer mine there. you can rent a 70 horse backhoe in my neck of the woods for a day for $400. You could clear a huge grove in no time and then dig berms or mounds or a pond or grade a driveway or remove stumps the rest of the day. Even with...

7 months of bamboo growth...
One of my many planting areas consists of a rock planter I made filled with fill dirt, horse manure, wood ash, and hot chicken manure with straw. I put the bamboos in on March 3 of this year (2017) and took the attached photo. I took the second photo from the same angle (this morning Sept. 17 2017.)...

Re: Cost and variety of bamboo sales in my region
I'd say I've seen the same thing in my region, Sierra Nevada foothills near Cooper. I used to never see bamboo for sale on C-list now I always see it and for super cheap. In fact Cooper are you the guy selling those $30 15 gallons in Placerville? Ha, I wondered if that was you when I saw the ad. Any...

Re: Bamboo in rock planter update
Back of my property with 40 plantings on about 1/4 acre. All been in mounds (great Needmore suggestion) since Feb of this year. Heavily mulched with Woodchips, horse manure, chicken manure. I have a 1'' poly tube running to plantings with 1/4'' holes drilled out and I can water all 40 plantings in a...

Bamboo in rock planter update
I love seeing photos of peoples bamboo areas so thought I'd share one of my areas. In this raised rock bed I have mostly bissetti and megurochiku mixed together. Also some of my basjoo banana plants, zucchinis (getting 2' long zucchinis underneath these bamboos,) and cannas mixed in. These bamboos h...

Re: Containment Method
There is a lot of information on this site about the difference between runners and clumpers and containment methods you can check out. But no Oldhamii will not travel 30' to a well, it is a clumping bamboo.

Re: Gopher advice?
Brad, ironically I think you have given me a solution to the gopher problem already. When you suggested that I plant in large mounds on the back part of my acreage which is lava cap/surface of the moon crappola, I noticed that it has also kept the gophers from getting up the mounds and eating my boo...

Re: Containment Method
Oldhammi isn't even a runner, there is no need to use steel culverts to contain it. In Stockton it will size up good. I was growing some in Sacramento at one point.

Re: Getting out of Growing Bamboo in Arizona!
Maybe someone has asked this but have you tried any runners there? For some reason I can't imagine decora and some others not hacking it in Pheonix...but others on here would know better than me. I am currently growing decora in a full sun mound of almost solid rock below it and in the winter time i...

Re: Heavy poor draining clay
That was my exact situation at my new home where I have transplanted all of my bamboos. I took Needmore's advice which was mounding, it is working out beautifully. Have a perfect environment now for them I the mounds and most are shooting right now. No root rot whatsoever. Thanks Brad! I also didn't...
