Re: SE Idaho, zone 5, what to grow?

Perhaps look into Phyllostachys rubromarginata. I don't have it but I'm looking to get some. It's supposed to be pretty wind resistant and quite cold hardy.

Bamboo and Couch grass

How do younger bamboo plants fair against couch grass? Does it slow their growth or out compete the immature plants?

Re: Bamboo for zone 6A

Regarding Henon, as I've posted before, have/had a dense fairly mature grove get killed to the ground a few years ago. I think it was around -5F or so. Vivax next to it fared only slightly better, with 70% KTG. Here is zone 7A, for what it is worth. Strange my Henon wasn't really hurt at all this w...

Re: Bamboo for zone 6A

Phyllostachys Nigra Henon is pretty hardy aswell. Mine rarely ever gets damaged in the winter. I am curious, how mature is your Henon grove and is it protected by any structures? I have two grove of Henon; Both 8 years old. One is planted on a hill in an open field and the other is in my back yard....

Re: Rhizome question

Is it possible to promote rhizome growth in some way? is there anything more you can do than just fertilize, or is there a specific fertilizer that can be used? I have found that they usually grow in a direction opposite of the way that I want them to grow....so if you hope they grow in the wrong d...

Re: Bamboo winter update (No pics)

Comox report Vancouver Island BC. Bamboo has done really good but I don’t think I’ve seen any temps lower then -5c. I’ve had some breakage on Vivax aureocaulis from snow but that’s it. My fargesia scabrida is shooting but it is up next to the home on a West wall. Upon more inspection I too found th...

Bamboo winter update (No pics)

I'm happy to report all my bamboo has stayed green so far this winter other than my Phyllostachys Vivax, which has suffered some damage so I guess I'll start tarping it every year. Surprisingly my Phyllostachys nigra is doing the best out of the bunch, although it is the most established so maybe it...

thanks for the replies. I think I'll move them to a south facing window and put a grow light on them as well, best I can do right now.

Re: Indoor Moso

Well... I'm using a little coiled florencent grow light... I can't afford to run a huge powerful light right now.

Thanks, if my Moso die I might have to get one off you.

Indoor Moso

Hey everyone, I started some Moso Bamboo from seeds last year in the spring and they were still fairly small so I decided to keep them inside for the winter but they're not fairing to well.
Is there anything I can do to make them survive until its warm enough to put them outside?
