Re: Winter 2014/2015
Was that palm protected? Also, when should I expectmy Nitida to shoot? My rufa used to shoot around this time of year.

Re: Bamboo Thief
You could just put a sign saying "guard cat on duty to protect bamboo, dont take it ask and you shall receive", starts off with a joke but is serious at the same time.

Re: Winter 2014/2015
ITs odd to hear about the scabrida. It is probably one of my favorites and the summer it was here it tripled in size. I dint protect it well though and it didnt make it. If i remember it got toasted really early compared to the rufa and alata I had at the same time. I hope to be able to get another ...

Re: Winter 2014/2015
I think the Rufa problem is a tissue culture problem. Here some plants sailed through this winter without a scratch whereas others around the province were hammered. As you know 3-4 yrs. ago I planted some Rufas in courtyards that are surrounded on 4 sides by 2 story brick walls, they have been rep...

Re: Winter 2014/2015
Up here in NW ontario, we seemed to have escaped the crap winter that down south in Toronto and the rest of the east had. Of course we didnt have a warm winter, but nothing in either extreme all winter. We did have a severe lack of snow though, just over a foot and it was all gone before the beginni...

Re: Phyllostachys aureosulcata cold hardiness
So far I havnt had any problems with mice in my mulched plants. Probably the different climates between slovania and canada :) Maybe it has something to do with the mulch material too? I use leaves and have never used anything else yet. I also tarp my bamboo, and soemtimes use buckets on other plant...

Re: Phyllostachys aureosulcata cold hardiness
TArzanus I got a look at my alata this morning. After no protection the plant is basically top killed BUT most of the boton 3 inches of the culms are green. Looks like the snow saved the bottom bit, even without mulch. In my experience, anything below -20to -25C will most likely top kill an alata (n...

Re: Phyllostachys aureosulcata cold hardiness
Mine took -37C with -55C windchils, bent over and mulched. This year it was unproteted with the lowest temp about -30C. This year it was left unprotected so im not sure if its alive or not. ITs definitely top killed. Personally its a long shot that the roots made it becasue we had little snow but wh...

Re: Dead Fargesia Rufa, Surviving "alata", and seedlings
It was bad up here too foxd. There were tons of conifers that came out of the winter brown, and quite a few ash trees with damage. Looks like some of my fruit trees got frost cracks as well. However, the rufa is still dead but the alata is doing well! All culms releafed except the top 3 inches of th...

Re: Growing and propagating comfrey for fertilizer
Steve you just wait till next year.... My plants went from your size to 5 feet across and 4 feet tall. The wind we had the other day somewhat flattened it. But guess what? Its only forced it to branch more from the center making the clump bigger. I dont think ive seen a plant bees love more either

Re: Fargesia dracocephala name change?
But then, isnt Fargesia rufa (Fargesia sp. "Rufa"), going to change too? I believe I read many papers stating rufa =/= dracocephala?
