Re: Comparison of Shanghai 3 and dulcis shoots.
I don't have any plans as yet, but it would be interesting to see their set up.

Re: P. dulcis?
I haven't stepped in anything. But there is a grey squirrel around. Speaking of monsters, the garden last year was overrun with slugs, most noticeably the one commonly named Spanish. I lost a couple of shoots - no great loss - but even the large leaves of the ivy Hedera Colchica were damaged and loo...

Re: Comparison of Shanghai 3 and dulcis shoots.
I purchased a fine iridescens plant last year from The Rodings and enjoyed a short but rare conversation about bamboo with Jane. I read they are hosting a Bamboo Society meet later in the year.

Re: P. dulcis?
This morning I spotted a new shoot emerging from the clump. What has happened to the culm sheaths?

Re: Comparison of Shanghai 3 and dulcis shoots.
Yes, beautiful shots. This is what I aspire to, maybe in ten years... Great shoots David , my dulcis is shooting but S3 is yet to shoot, it’s funny how shooting can be so different from Country to country Hi Deane, Do you have pics of your dulcis shooting? If you didn't get your plant from Bowden Ho...

Re: P. dulcis?
I was surprised to find new shoots about 18" away from the main clump. I expected it would stay tight and maybe upsize a bit.

Re: Another green Phyllostachys
These days when selling bamboo installations, I don't bother with pots as much It can be an interesting proposition (initially at least) when your mail order bamboo arrives and it has buds or rhizomes growing out of the drainage holes, or it has buckled the pot all out of shape. Who knew a carpet k...

Re: Another green Phyllostachys
I planted a row of P a aureocaulis once that I lazily did not unwrap the rhizomes that were tightly binding the plant pot shaped root ball, and they stayed in a fairly tight clumps many years. This is interesting to note. David Crompton, in his wonderful book, Ornametal Bamboos, writes that unwrapp...

Re: Another green Phyllostachys
Thanks, Glen. I have been wanting to ID this plant for a while. Rubro would be my guess as well, assuming it is a phyllostachys. It is definitely a Phyllostachys. There are the characteristic sulci or grooves. I guess it might be pruning that has kept the plant tight. I am told it was a division and...

Another green Phyllostachys
I wonder if this could be ID'd. It has been in the ground for over a decade and hasn't moved from a tight clump. The soil around the plant hasn't been improved and the house wall must cast something of a rain shadow.

Re: Proposed F. robusta hedge against a boundary
Thanks for chiming in. The area I have to cover is only about 10 metres/32 feet.
I am not saying it is not warranted but that is deep, man.fredgpops wrote:My robusta is pretty shallow but I'd sink the paper down 2 1/2 to 3 ft. RGds

Re: Proposed F. robusta hedge against a boundary
Seems like it should work for a Fargesia? I'm not sure. Tarzanus had a spectabilis rhizome lift a slab that was heavier than he could lift. A easy and less expensive alternative may be commercial roofing paper made with various plastics. I used some years ago to control Black bamboo and it's still ...

I have found Roy's posts. I see you have pointed other's there "once or twice" in the past. http://www.bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7360&p=71417&hilit=Roy+Rogers#p71417 http://www.bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=711&hilit=tropical+bamboo+rhizome+control+...

Re: Proposed F. robusta hedge against a boundary
Thank you for the replies! Maybe lay down a row of cement paving stones and cover them with mulch? Brad, that would be great, but wouldn't the emerging rhizomes simply lift the slabs or even produce long rhizome necks? In one of the threads wind-borne kindly linked here, rhizomes are lifting a copin...

Proposed F. robusta hedge against a boundary
I am thinking about transplanting some robusta plants to form a hedge along the fence shown in the picture. I was wondering about the best method of containing the plants on the fence side. If the best method of containment is a commercial rhizome barrier, what specification is needed for a clumping...
