Re: What phyllo is this?
The color I saw was deeper plum color, and there was no light-colored tan/beige areas as in the shoot in your photo. And I saw none of aurea's characteristic short internodes at the culm bases. Guess I'll have to go back and take pictures.

What phyllo is this?
I was out in Dallas yesterday at the "Coop Tour," a tour of urban homes with chicken coops. One home had a large grove of bamboo that, from a distance, looked much like p. aurea or p. rubro, with lots of tall, straight, 2" x 30' canes in a medium green. But there were no stunted inter...

Re: enough is enough
any of you guys down in Tx try Henon? we get pretty hot and dry here in the summer, with months of little to no rain, and Henon, once established for a few years, does pretty good. Henon grows well in northeast Texas. Someone started a few groves of henon about 50 years ago that have done well in t...

Re: Winter hardiness tests
Here's an pretty good example of bamboo in Dallas, TX where we've had a few nights in the mid-teens and one light snow this season. The picture below is in an alley where nothing gets watered. The darker green in the center of the picture is Ph. aurea (golden) while the larger, brown, crispy around ...

Harvesting bamboo question
Here's a question for anyone who's had experience with clear cutting groves of phyllostachys bamboos. If you were today to completely clear of all culms, a mature grove of golden at least 15+ years of age or more, a few thousand square feet, leaving the rhizomes intact and mulched. What would you ex...

Re: thats a size 10 boot
Not exactly sure what it is, but you can bet I'll be back with my diggin stuff. Sure looks like henon to me - just like the grove in East Texas Mackel and I visited last fall. I cut a couple of nice poles to take with me when we were there, and I've noticed that the gray-green surface of henon pole...

Re: Learning the basics. Good book? How did you learn?
Really for the most current growing info (also specific to geography) the forum is better than any book you'll ever find. I have and enjoy "The Book of Bamboo" by David Farrelly - but there's only a little growing info in there. Mostly it's about history, uses, and has a pretty decent lis...

Re: phyllostachys lutea
A little extra info pinched from the web LOL... Phyllostachys edulis 'Lutea' 9 Taxonomic and nomenclatural references: Yes, that clears it up! It is rather strange how murky the taxonomy of bamboo has become. Is there some sort of master bamboo reference that brings together all the different attem...

Re: phyllostachys lutea
could it be this one ? the arcana luteosulcata http://www.bambus-lexikon.de/arcana-luteosulcata.html philippe I don't recall the yellow sulcus, but the general size and color is about the same as p. arcana luteosulcata. After reading the description of p. arcana 'half-black', it could be more a mat...

phyllostachys lutea
Touring the Dallas Arboretum yesterday, I was admiring the groves of what I believed to be golden bamboo, or phyllostachys aurea. Much to my surprise, I found a solitary identification marker labeled "Bamboo - phyllostachys lutea." On closer look, I found none of aurea's characteristic sho...

Re: East Texas henon
Are there any photos that show how tall those culms are? Michael is about 5'10". By my rough estimate, that makes the culms next to him about 36 ft. There are larger diameter culms in the interior of the grove. http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs114.snc3/16131_1192104055756_1623043...

Re: East Texas henon
Hello Artie, How old is that grove of Henon??? Nice Photos!!! Too bad Henon will not get nearly that big here.... Thanks! Finding this grove really knocked my socks off. The owner of the land told me that the bamboo was there when he bought the land 40 years ago. That would suggest the grove could ...

Those are some nice pics. I wonder who those two fellers are  Mackel and Randall are the unnamed bambuseros in the previous picture! We had a great time exploring this grove.
