Re: TC of black bamboo
Adam, it's been a long time since I bought a non-TC plant from Boo-Shoot, but last I did, they were very open about the propagation method. Also, it's pretty easy to tell when up potting one gallon plants (Phyllostachys) because the old rhizome is easily spotted in the root ball. I have had really g...

Dendrocalamus giganteus flowering
I was at Quail Botanical Garden over the weekend, and got a great guided tour of the bamboo while I was there. We noticed several of the bamboos that were flowering, I think all were genus Dendrocalamus, but not for positive on that. Lots of stresses on the bamboos there, including high salts in the...

Re: Fargesia robust 'Wenchuan'
Alan, I don't know about anywhere else, but in Western WA, full sun OK for this robusta variety
Nate, don't know who has it or how much for it. Jackie doesn't have it on her price list yet, and it doesn't look like Ned has it for sale either.

Fargesia robust 'Wenchuan'
I got this one from boo-shoot gardens last friday. Reports from Jackie are that Wenchuan is much hardier than the species. They had more than one day at 4 degress F., and much more freezing weather than a normal winter. Foliage on Wenchuan wasn't damaged, but the straight robusta was hammered pretty...

RE: XL Fargesia rufa
Actually, that's a plant I installed for a customer, and I happened to be in the area and took that pic. Below is a link to a few pics showing 3 growing seasons of a plant in my yard. I have found that the more shade, the more upright this plant grows. In full sun, more squat and splayed. All of the...

RE: XL Fargesia rufa
Here's a pic of a Rufa I planted, I think as a full, one gallon container. http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/CkvFzZugsk2w9JQqB95cuA?authkey=Gv1sRgCK7PweHxod-MVg&feat=directlink Here's the same plant 4 years later. I am anxious to see what it looks like after shooting this year. http://picasaw...

RE: Most FAQs by those new to bamboo
Rick, halfside is ka-put as a retail nursery since I bought a partnership into a landscape company with my inventory (July 2007). I still have the domain name, and have plans to promote some education, workshops, consulting with a website. Will keep you posted when something happens. Thanks!

Most FAQs by those new to bamboo
I am gearing up to start a bamboo blog, and I am including a page that deals with those FAQs we hear from bamboo initiates. I know the ones I hear as a bamboo grower/retailer, but I would like to know which questions you see the most on this forum so I can be sure to address at least the top ten mos...

So, does P. fortunei survive flowering, or is it a goner?

RE: Is heavy mulching okay in my grove?
I have used newspaper under mulch on many new plantings, including a P. bissetii hedge. It worked great. The newspaper will decompose over a short time, but does a great job of smothering weed seeds on new plantings. I used it on a fall planting, and the new shoots came up right through it in the sp...
