A few more on the move now:

Fargesia murieliae 'Bimbo'
Yushania ferax
Borinda papyrifera
Borinda albocera (Yunnan 2)
It's been nice and sunny here the last 2 weeks with no rain at all, the nights are still cold with the occasional light frost though.
Cheers,
Gaz.

Re: differences in re-leafing
I was also under the impression that blade and bud growth in the spring was a pre-cursor to shooting. I'm sure I've both read and heard this before. It makes sense but I suspect bud and shoots never come together. Phy. praecox is just pushing through but I think these are stalled late shoots from th...

Correct. Micropropagation can be defined as:- growing plants from seed or small pieces of tissue under sterile conditions in a laboratory on specially selected media.

Re: Rhizome Barrier??? - Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis'
Even in the uk it'll run maybe 6 - 10 feet in a season and not necessarily shoot on these rhizomes until the following year or even the year after. If you keep it well mulched it will normally run close to the surface making the runners easier to spot. I have two vivax with bamboo barrier here and t...

Re: Borinda papyrifera were to buy...
You'll probably struggle to track one down, but you could try Pan Global Plants (collection only though). Mike Brisbane at Jungle Giants normally stocks this but they are micro-propped. Or you could just post on the forums and try and beg or buy a division. It's not impossible to find but sometimes ...

Re: Depth for planting a new division
I'd plant it pretty much level with the ground with a thin covering of soil over the rootball and then add a good mulch around the plant extending past the rootball. This will help to conserve moisture and encourage it to grow new roots.

Re: Earthworm Mystery
You guessed right earthworms can climb, at night when the weathers wet here I've seen them climbing the walls on the patio. I've always wondered how they did it, very slowly I guess. Nature don't you just love it!

Re: Borinda lushuiensis / Yunnan 4...WOW!
Mine here took -9c last winter and was pretty much defoliated, the late leafless culms survived though and it bounced back in the spring. The plant as a whole looks awful over winter but once it has grown new blades its back to its usual stunning self. My biggest problem is the wind I've lost more t...

Thamnocalamus crassinodus 'Lang Tang' Yushania maculata There's not much left to come up here now apart from the late shooters, however I wait in earnest for Ph. vivax 'Huanwenzhu' which should be the biggest in the garden, fingers crossed. Congrats on the baby bamboozal, you'll probably find it'll ...

Re: Wind damage, right?
I've had some luck in the past with using splints on bent canes, works better with clumpers though due to thicker culm walls. I've tried with aureosulcata and the cane has hardened off only to be broken again in the autumn. As its got plenty of new growth just snap it off it won't do any harm.

Re: 2009 Boo Shooting Diary
P.vivax 'Huanwenzhu Inversa' On another note my P.praecox 'Viridisulcata' is trying to flower again, it does this every year and although it never really goes all the way the energy it uses seems to cause problems with the new culms. The strange thing is it only flowers on the previous years branchl...

Re: Tornado Shield: An Excellent Reason to Grow Bamboo!
That is absolutely amazing, especially as vivax is considered to be a thin walled bamboo and is susceptible to damage from the weight of snow and high winds. Another use to add to the list then hey!! Thoughts go out to the others who weren't so lucky. By the way how wide is the grove as its difficul...
