Re: 'Megurochiku' flowering

I have a long mound of Megurochiku here in El Dorado Hills that I planted from three big pots (which all came from a single plant at my old place in Placerville). Now, I see one cane is flowering very heavily. We'll see what happens.

And I'll be taking out big chunks of Sweetshoot, Ph. Dulcis, wandering rhizomes any time if you're interested.

Re: Phyllostachys nigra Megurochiku cold tolerance

Up there in the Fort Jim area, my Megurochiku did the best and got the largest of all except for the Sweetshoot, which is meant to be thicker (but shorter (and not so straight)).

Re: Cute little guy but might be a problem

Every robin in my county roosts in the bamboo in my backyard. It makes me stop working back there when it gets to dusk because I feel bad when I hear them spook and fly away - to roost god knows where. The bamboo is so thick they are safe from owls.

Re: Shiroshima to take, Folsom area

Sure. There is plenty. I'm getting rid of it one way or the other eventually - not a big rush.

I think I figured how to attach.

Shiroshima to take, Folsom area

Folsom area. Getting rid of Shiroshima. You haul it, it's yours. If someone else wants a good start from it, I'll set it aside for you. It's busting out of half a wine barrel. PM if interested.

Re: Bamboo in Fresno

Hmmm. I'm next to Folsom in the blazing dry sun of summer. As long as it gets its water, my Giant Timber does very well, no problem. I have quite a few runners that do equally well: Meguro Chiku, Black, Glauca, Henon (seems to want to become the biggest), Castillon, Sweet Shoot (gets nicely fat very...

Re: small space for big bamboo.... Will it work?

9 inches is either a typo or a joke. There was a legal settlement? That means there was some sort of trial or judgement where a settlement was reached. What settlement would ever end in a person having to grow bamboo or do something on their own property for the satisfaction of a neighbor? Later in ...

Re: small space for big bamboo.... Will it work?

Wine barrels tend to be wider than 9" if 9" is the only available width.

Re: Vine taking over my bamboo...

No, it's not bindweed. Google images will show that.

If you can separate the invading leaves from your bamboo and hit some of them with round-up, it will kill or almost kill the whole plant. That, and keeping it down with subsequent spraying and chopping will get rid of it.

9 inches by 18 feet? A legal agreement? I could be wrong but it sounds like a typo or a trollo.

Re: When to thin out a grove?

The least energy is above-ground in the dead of winter. If you want to save the plant's energy, thin then. For me that is December. If I see a culm start to come up and I know I will thin it later, I cut the shoot immediately before the plant invests energy into growing it. If you want to slow the g...

Re: Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Harbin'

Brad, I haven't barriered mine. rather than digging, almost all my plants are mounded up. The dirt here is clay and soft rock. It's easier to dig up than down :) . As the years go on, I will bring in dirt and free-ish horse manure/straw. The longterm plan is to have everything contained by retaining...

Re: Almost Soda can size

I have never had a soda can size up that fast. The bamboo next to it sure sounds like it grows like a Dulcis but my Dulcis, which are the same size, are much curvier, not so straight.
