Re: How I trick squirrels into leaving my bambo shoots alone
They're back at my place and chewed the top out of a 2" Japanese Timber shoot. I'll be buying peppers in the morning, but if one these suckers shows itself tomorrow there will be one less squirrel.

Ph. Bambusoides is putting up shoots Zone 8b. I believe this is the earliest I've seen shoots on this one.

Re: Why is Moso so hard to grow large?
There will be some tree felling as the Moso spreads that way. The grove gets full sun til about 1 or 2pm.

Re: Why is Moso so hard to grow large?
I add fresh horse manure starting at the first of the year til it puts up shoots. No supplemental water, don't need it where in Mobile (50+ inches per year and the wettest period right before shooting season).

Re: Why is Moso so hard to grow large?
Digging up an old thread: 6 year old Moso from a 5gal, 4ft tall plant, looks like it will reach 20ft with 1 1/2"dia culms. The younger smaller planting of Japanese Timber still has it on size.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014
A little update on my Moso shoots: the tallest have reached 10ft and still growing and the largest culms are a good 1 3/4" in diameter.

Re: How I trick squirrels into leaving my bambo shoots alone
Update: I've been working 12's for the last 4 days and been unable to survey the damage. I came out this morning with a gallon of Habinaro (sp) juice to pour on the remaining shoots and found no additional damage. Seems they got the memo, but the juice is going on anyway. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/1...

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014
My Moso has continued to put up shoots with good upsize and is spreading out finally. It has taken years but my 5 gal planting has become a 20' diameter grove.

Re: How I trick squirrels into leaving my bambo shoots alone
I left 5 dead ones around the bamboo and the foxes carried them off the same night. I didn't see any squirrels yesterday but had more damage today. You'd think they'd learn a lesson, but I may have to spend a little more time and eliminate a few more. I don't live in the city so no ordinances are br...

Re: How I trick squirrels into leaving my bambo shoots alone
Moso shoots are coming up and the squirrels have found them. Bad news for the tree rats! My son came over and we had a killing, 10 squirrels down; the Fox Squirrels got to live. We'll see what tomorrow http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/18/apa4e6e2.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/18/e8egeqap.jpg br...

Boo Shoots for 2014
Steve, maybe you don't know how Deep South I am, I'm south of I-10 and a couple of miles west of Mobile Bay. My Moso put up shoots on March 10th last year. We get lots of rainfall this time of year and when it hits a warm spell, the Moso puts up shoots. We've already had Japanese Maples and Plum tre...
