Re: Parker Giant growth in Deep South Texas

Just for interest here is a photo of our D.Latiflorus at just under 3 years old. I've since cleaned out some of the smaller culms over winter but don't have an updated photo.

Re: Parker Giant growth in Deep South Texas

Hi Boonut I'm certainly no expert but merely an enthuisiastic bamboo devotee. The soil we have at home is a fairly heavy clay but the bamboos respond well particularly when organic matter is incorporated into the soil to help break it up. By far the strongest and fasting growing bamboo I have is the...

Re: Parker Giant growth in Deep South Texas

Very nice Boonut, that's a great looking bamboo!
You can certainly see why someone may think that it is a latiflorus by the orange tips on the new culms.
Great to see those photos

Re: B. chungii - finnicky?

I've always found Chungii to be a bit of a slow starter compared with most other clumpers - takes a while to settle in and then really gets going in my experience.

Re: propagating clumping bamboo

Hi Big Bambusa, I don't have any other photos to help clarify the process. I didn't think to take photos of the actual one and two-node cuttings before putting them in the growing medium, although I didn't do anything different to the cuttings then you would if you were just attempting to propagate ...

propagating clumping bamboo

I thought some of you other guys that are into the tropical clumpers might be interested in the promising start I have had with this. For a few years now I have been growing a number of species of tropical bamboos at home. In the past I have tried propagating them with limited success with tradition...

Re: Dendrocalamus Latiflorus upsizing

Thanks Needmore Boonut, I'd be really interested to hear as time progresses how your D. Maroochy fair in the ground. I'm definitely looking forward to getting one planted. It's amazing how resilient things can be so that's great news that there are some positive things happening after that bad winte...

Re: Dendrocalamus Latiflorus upsizing

Thanks Boonut, that's a shame yours didn't do well in an exposed position. I remember a fair while ago you posted some photos of D. Maroochy in those large pots, the huge leaves were really striking. I'm thinking of picking one up shortly for the collection, did you ever plant yours out? And if so, ...

Dendrocalamus Latiflorus upsizing

I thought I'd post a couple of photos of this D. Latiflorus I planted in April 2008 as a 2 gallon pot. Propagating bamboo by cuttings -would this work?

Hi all I've had success propagating B. Oldhamii by the traditional single node cutting method in the past. I haven't got around to trying some of my other clumpers at this stage. Anyhow, I recently set up an aquaponics system with flood & drain grow beds. The grow bed media is expanded clay pebb...

Re: Dendrocalamus Amoenus Minor photo

November 2009

Leafing out well, I think I have to tidy it up a little though by thinning out a few culms, it's getting pretty crowded in there.
I'm really pleased with the growth (2 years and 2 months planted)

Great photos, that sure is an impressive specimen! Should gain some good height for you this year with the diameter of those new culms.

Re: Putting layer of manure on grove

When I put down a layer of manure around my clumping bamboos I prefer to put an additional thin layer of mulch/leaves over the top. It's more work but I reckon it keeps a bit more moisture in the manure layer which has to be good, although I'm sure manure works well on it's own as a mulch. For me, a...
