Re: VERY new to this! care to help with an ID?

I am also now in Houston working and the pics look all to familiar. And I agree with needmore. There is lots of bamboo here and another local from here post often in here (probably down at the new place durning spring break) is quite familiar with many of the bamboo grown here and he might have a di...

Re: Aeration Container for Bamboo

I have not tried them but here is my thoughts. My first gut reaction to this was it would not work. I do not believe that the material is strong enough to contain rhizomes from runners. Rhizomes are not roots like trees and convention vegetables have, but rather an underground vine kinda of a thing....

Re: Containment by shoot removal

I cannot answer the question about maintaining a trench and the pruning method since I have very limited experience with this method. But in cases where I did see it employed it seemed to work ok but a lot of work was involved. I have a lot of bamboo that will want to be intermingling in the not too...

Re: Record Lowest Temperatures by State

If you look at the Florida map, my bamboo is just about the center of the 8a zone. I have seen it in single digits only a few times in my life, but you can almost count on the low 20s every year. It does not last long and in general we have a nice easy winter that lasts about two weeks if you add it...

It is always a risk to plant anything but grass.

Re: Japanese Weeping Cherry Trees.

to Growinghabit: Your zone 8 is a lot different that our zone 8 - zones indicate the lowest temps that will be seen during normal years. The "chilling" hours you get are a lot more than the chilling hours we get here in the Gulf Coast area zone 8. I am very familiar with the zone 8 in your...

Re: Japanese Weeping Cherry Trees.

First thing to consider: Have you seen any nice looking ones in the neighborhood?

Cherry trees are not for zone 8b as a rule, but I did see an article on some in the Los Angles area.

Big Green Bamboo in Togo

Hi All, I traveled to Togo West Africa in September of 08 and stayed there through February 09. Being the bamboo freak that I am, I was anxious to find out about the local tropical bamboo there. Bamboo was prevalent in the landscape and in the wild there and they made utilitarian use from it in so m...

Re: Soaker hoses and miracle-gro

If there are particles (un-dissolved fertilizer) in the solution then it will plug the hoses. You could filter the liquid before you add it for distribution.

RE: Growing on a grade

The answer to your first question is: Runners grow vertical, mostly. just kidding. They will seek the best soil and light for the type. Moso will run to the sun and rich well drain soil that receives a good amount of water. (I hope you have a south facing hill for the moso.) 2. Moso is not a deep ru...

RE: Bellingrath Gardens

The moso was planted after hurricane Charlie came through in 1979, I think. It was very young when i visited in the early 80s while I was attending USA. It was not there before when i visited in the late 70s.

RE: Mystery in a Phyllostchys Nigra pot

How long between purchase and transplant? I ask this because I only see P. nigra in the purchases pot and the three green culms in the transplant photo are larger then the culms in the purchase photo. When you transplanted, were the culms connected?

RE: Aurea or mixed grove? Or?

P. aurea will grow to 3 in dia. by 50 ft tall in the best of conditions here in zone 8a in northwest FL. They do best along side a low spot that is the beginning of a drain off or on the edges of swamps. Average size for the large culms (5-10 percent) in these groves is 2.5 in dia. and 45 ft tall. I...
