Re: Watering

Sorry to hear that Brad. I hope it's a good move for you. I'd always intended to drive down the hill to meet you and your bamboo. Good luck on the move.

Re: P. Bambusoides or something else?

I think you're right, it certainly could be Phy. dulcis. Apparently the younger culms can have powder at the margins (http://www.bamboogarden.com/Phyllostachys%20dulcis.htm). Also, in this particular grove, all the culms seemed to top out at about 40 feet.

P. Bambusoides or something else?

Hey y'all. I hope your spring shoots are tall and glorious now. I recently came upon a grove where the owner thinks the following are Phllyostachys bambusoides, but my recollection of P. bam. is that they have two rings at the node margin. These seem to have the white powder at the margin, which wou...

Viewing bamboo from the Smithsonian collection

The Smithsonian just released 2.5 million images, and bamboo is well represented. For those who are interested, here's a sample link:

Unknown bamboo in Costa Rica

Hey All, I just had a friend return from Costa Rica where he took a few pictures of some bamboo. Knowing my interest, he forwarded his pictures to me. I have no idea what these are? Bambusoides? Can anyone help to ID? In the meantime, all my girls are getting covered in snow and waiting for the firs...

Help to identify seedlings?

Hi All,

I've been growing the following from seedlings. They sprouted last year in early August (2018). Can anyone help to identify from the photos? I've got my first real culm coming up, and was hoping that might help to ID.

thanks!

Re: Taco Talk

Thanks Glen. That's a relief to hear. I'll watch for burn/yellowing too.

Taco Talk

Hey All, All of my bamboos are in pots, and because of that, I've been able to experiment with moving them around to different locations in the yard based on sunlight received. As the summer heats up here in the Sierra foothills, I've noticed that some of my bamboos (primarily the P. nuda & P. v...

Re: Starts from Seed

Update on my seed experiment from a year ago. Most of the seedlings from what are purported by the seller to be F. Jiuzhaigou IV seeds survived the winter. Here are two pictures of the plants from this week. They've still not really taken off considering the seeds were planted a year ago, but they *...

Article on Quora: Why isn't bamboo wood a bigger worldwide..

Why isn't bamboo wood a bigger worldwide industry, since it grows so quickly and is so strong? Couldn't it replace lumber and save many trees? TL;DR: bamboo wood doesn’t exist, and bamboo is not very good at replacing real wood in most situations. https://www.quora.com/Why-isnt-bamboo-wood-a-bigger-...

P. aurea 'koi' - rose culms

I've had my P. Aurea 'koi' in a pot for just over a year and had some nice culms this past Spring. This bamboo is out in the sun for most of the early morning. Just noticed yesterday the nice rose colored hue on the newer culms. What a gorgeous color.

Re: Starts from Seed

Update on my seed experiment. I still have about 6 of the Fargesia 'Jiuzhaigou' IV seedlings (if that's what they really are) and 6 of the P. Edulis seedlings going. They're not exactly taking off like gangbusters, but they are doing well and still alive. One of the F. Jiuzhaigou IV seedlings is sho...
