Re: Horse manure in new bamboo bed
Unless the topsoil is poor, I can't see why you shouldn't use the manure as a mulch.

Re: P. aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' -- flowering (I think)
A couple of branches are flowering on one of my plants. Hoping for some viable seed.

I don't believe that bamboo would have voted leave.

Re: stunted phyllostachys
I have just happened upon your post and wondered if your aureocaulis is shooting? If not, it could just be "sulking," that is, establishing itself below ground and building energy reserves.

Re: Moving Phyllostachys
I have found a trenching spade makes excavating easier. You could be surprised by the size of the rootball. I had a 5 litre pot of Phyllostachys aureosulcata "Spectabilis' in a barrel for one year, in-ground for two years, and the rootball measured 3ft across, 3ft down. I had to cut it in half ...

Re: Fargesia demissa 'Gerry'
Another great mature specimen growing in Germany. I have the Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) and the blue thistle-like flowers of Centaurea montana growing adjacent to the plant, and all three somewhat reflect each other in terms of colour. But the simple green foliage of the fern and Ornamental c...

Re: exterior metal paint on plants - wash off or prune?
Cheers, Alan!
I wasn't sure if I had the right forum for this topic, but they are, after all, pests where plants are concerned.Alan_L wrote:Don't get me started on contractors and plants...

Re: Moving Phyllostachys
They say it is best to choose a cool, still, overcast day, when moving plants, to limit transpiration. The last time I dug out a bamboo, I rolled it onto a tarpaulin sheet before dragging it (kicking and screaming) from the hole. It is a good thing to fine spray before wrapping the rootball for tran...

exterior metal paint on plants - wash off or prune?
We had a contractor in today tasked to paint the exterior windows and doors. I thought everything was going "swimmingly," too swimmingly, when he appeared and began immediately slapping black paint on the washing line poles. If I had known, if the letter had stated the poles were set to be...

Re: P. dulcis?
Well spotted! And thank you for pointing them out. I have read spider mites (pardon the puns) are not a serious problem on outdoor plants here. They "thrive in warm, dry conditions." That is not Central Scotland.

Re: P. dulcis?
My understanding is that Phy viridiglaucescens in quite common in Europe and that shoot looks like a candidate to me. Thanks, Brad, I'll look that one up. Too young to ID properly, I'm afraid. I was afraid that might still be the case when I posted the pic. And I fear it will take a couple of seaso...

Re: P. dulcis?
This is an increase in size. But is it still too juvenile to be identified?
