Re: Rhizomes moving early--
Hmm that's always normal for me. I already have rhizomes that are 5 feet or more. If you have enough sun, water and fertilizer the bamboos will leaf out fast and then send out rhizomes faster too. Then with enough of those things too if the rhizomes grow out fast enough you'll get another shooting ...

Rhizomes moving early--
I typically don't see my Vivax rhizomes starting to creep until August or Sept. But it has been unseasonable hot here early in July and I'm wondering if that has them faked out. But spreading out they are and more 100 degree weather on the way this week.

Re: P. Nigra " punctata " in flower
A number of years ago a friend and I went to the "Bamboo Garden" and he bought some black bamboo. He told me recently that it is flowering. Neither of us have any idea what variety of black bamboo it is. So this make me wonder if it is Punctata. He pulled a lot of seeds off of the culms an...

Re: Leaving Broken Culms still living.
Good job Fedora and welcome to the site :D Your grove of P. Vivax is inspirational to me. I'm on the S.E side of Vancouver Island and I'm sure if I give it some time and nutrition my Aureocaulis could attain some size like your wonderful grove of P. Vivax your growing in Eugene...... I hope anyway ...

Re: Reduced watering, increased culm strength??????
Thanks for the info. So it would seem the added culm strength would come from them growing with less water rather than cutting back on the water later. Is that a correct assumption or would just cutting back later in the season have the same benefit. Sorry for my ignorance on this.
thanks fedora

Reduced watering, increased culm strength??????
As we all know Vivax isn't known for it's culm strength. With the snow damage I've had in past years I've wondered if I cut way back on watering after the new culms have branched out, would that help to "harden" off the culms and make them stronger through the winter? I've never done it as...

Re: Leaving Broken Culms still living.
Beautiful! I envy your grove! Thanks, I've been cultivating it over 20 years now. This is the best pic I've ever taken of it. It was at night with a flash and it gave it an interesting look. Unfortunately most of the culms in this pic were broken in past snow and ice storms and had to be removed. H...

Golden Vivax Pic
When I retired from working for the City of Eugene, they made me this Street name sign. The Golden Vivax made a nice background pic with it. There is a green culm with a yellow stripe that came up, you can see it in the pic. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/fedoralover/IMG20071102_20050101_000...

Re: Leaving Broken Culms still living.
Thanks for the advice. My Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' I have along side my driveway took a hit too but not as bad. It's heart breaking to have culms pushing 4 inches break. BTW David, there is a custom hatter here in Eugene that does excellent work if you ever want one a custom fedora made. He...

Leaving Broken Culms still living.
hello fellow bamboo lovers. I just signed up for the forum and was happy I found it. I live in Eugene Oregon and we had a b ad winter two years ago. We had a freezing rain which took a heavy toll on my Vivax grove, leaving many culms broken. Many still lived so I was hesitant to remove them all for ...
