Re: Big plans for P. Atrovaginata
Thanks for all the info! I plan on getting some more starts of atro to help fill in the area I want the grove to encompass. Just a quick note; of all my other planted varieties atro has spread the most in the first full season. 3 rhizomes from what I can tell up to 3 feet away. I'm taking pics of al...

Re: Big plans for P. Atrovaginata
Thanks for the replies. I do have other varieties growing, I just want ALOT of Atro considering what I've read about it. My soil PH is 5.4-5.8. Fairly acidic. My overall plan is to have a large open grove that spans a few acres. In a mature grove, how many culms per square yard would you guesstimate...

Big plans for P. Atrovaginata
Hi everybody, After lots of research on what bamboo I should plant for my future forest/ grove, I've settled on Atro. Looking through some older posts, especially needmore and stevelau's has really helped. I only have 1 planting at this time, but am going to purchase more starts to fill in the area ...

Re: comparing Phyllostachys species for edible shoots
The only P. species I have tasted was Aureosulcata. Just this spring I stepped on a shoot so I thought I would give it a try. Not too bad actually. Had a hint of cucumber to it. Much better than I expected considering what I read about yellow groove having an acrid taste. Not exactly all the info yo...

Re: Please I.D. mystery shrub
That was what I was hoping it was. perhaps I will have more luck identifying it when the flowers bloom. I know theyre invasive but they make alot of edible berries. Kinda pretty too. Thanks!

Re: Please I.D. mystery shrub
The leaves have fine speckles on the front. The back is a whitish green. Average leaf size is about 1 inch. There is a honeysuckle bush next to it so I know its not that. Thanks in advance!

Re: Sleep, Creep, Leap
Im not sure how big your groves are Alan, but the lady I bought my yellow groove from has a grove that is pretty impressive. The size of the culms are around the 2 inch mark, and I estimated one harvested culm at over 40 feet. That is what got me hooked on bamboo. That grove was 15 years old when I ...

Re: Sleep, Creep, Leap
I have had yellow groove in the ground for just over 3 years now. I started with 6 BIG divisions over 100 lbs and a coup le of smaller ones about 30 lbs. The first year all but 2 big clumps sent out "stress shoots" and since then only 1 of the smaller plantings has done anything. Just 2 rh...

Phyllostachys Flowering North America
First things first, I've been looking over this forum for a few months now and am very impressed with the knowledge bank here. Thank you to all the contributors! Now to the topic, I've been wondering if we have any good data on flowering cycles for Phyllo species in NA and do we know anything about ...

Re: Bamboo in Wood Chip Berm
Was the mulch hardwood or conifer? If it was hardwood I would recommend adding a mushroom spawn like wine cap or oyster. The shrooms will unlock tons of nutrients for your boo as well as provide you with some good food. It will increase the breakdown rate of the mulch though.
