Re: Free Bamboo

Is your bamboo still available? I would be interested in some Arundinaria gigantea and Pseudosasa japonica or anything that would make good arrow shafts.

Re: Germinating some seeds indoors

It is a shame that a flower that impressive and showy stinks like road kill. I hope you have a lot of fly swatters.

Re: Sawdust / grass question

I agree. But this will be spread let's say in Jan, and between my crop rows where only grass is now. The idea would be to mix it with some carbon (woodchips) and your microbe brew for several months before any possibility of growth would emerge (april/may) to give it time to bind. Thoughts?[/quote] ...

Re: Sawdust / grass question

thanks for the tip, Steve :) I am going to call that place tomorrow! What do you think about having him dump a 1" layer of chicken manure in between my rows of bamboo (I will need roughly 15 loads to cover my terrain!), spraying those microbes MadHatter was talking about after the manure is du...

Re: Looking for Arundinaria Gigantea division

If you are looking into bamboos to build, might as well go with some of the strongest species out there. I know Needmore has propinqua "Beijing" which is one of the hardiest ones with perhaps the strongest culms out of the super hardy kinds. I've found Makinoi is also pretty strong too, b...

Re: Sawdust / grass question

My 36,000 feet is split into 8 zones so while some on the front of each zone would receive more than others, hopefully not to the extent I first suggested. I need to read up on this.. please send me some good starting links to make this compost tea in liquid forms.... there is a guy who sells 375 g...

Re: Sawdust / grass question

I will look it up this evening and get it to you. But volume is not important, any size container will work as well as any volume of water. I think the critical factor would be with 36,000 feet of line, figuring out at what rate your injector is releasing into your feed line and how long it will tak...

Re: Sawdust / grass question

From my understanding sawdust will break down fastest when certain mushroom spores are introduced that feed on it. If the sawdust/chips are turned into the soil it will tie up nitrogen in the soil since the bacteria that break it down use nitrogen for fuel. If they remain on top and undisturbed this...

Re: Setting up my solar greenhouse.

There is another option which is making a large compost heap right outside your greenhouse and coiling black plastic water line in the center and then looping in through your greenhouse. Horse manure mixed with leaves and some water can create 130 degree plus temps. It would need to be a pile of at ...

Re: Setting up my solar greenhouse.

I wish I could get away with heating my greenhouses this way. Nice work! Looks like you will be able to accomplish your goal. There are plans for a solar heater on the web using a series of soda cans in tandem which are painted black but this requires a small fan to circulate the air through the can...

Re: Looking for Arundinaria Gigantea division

Nice looking clock! I would have never thought of that. I make primitive arrows and atlatl darts. I haven't branched out into anything else yet but I am sure there are a millions uses for the stuff. As of right now I only have Japanese arrow bamboo and that is something I just recently aquired and p...

Re: Grafting Bamboo

I have no issues with hybridizing, It happens naturally and domestically. There has been a great improvement in the food we eat over thousands of years until the onset of chemically refined mineral salts and pesticide/herbicide applications which have essentially ruined the soils fertility by killin...

Grafting Bamboo

Has anyone tried grafting bamboo? I wonder if it is possible to take an ornamental that doesn't grow large and graft it to the rootstock of a timber bamboo for instance or the other way around. Is this possible? I could see some difficulty in grafting canes together due to size difference and the st...

Re: Looking for Arundinaria Gigantea division

I must say this idea of Bamboo in the landscape is growing on me. The members here have some really nice looking stuff. I am new to the cultivation of giant grasses and my exposure to any of them has been quite limited. I am starting to see the value they have to a landscape. Note that A. gigantea ...
