Re: Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
Time for an update! It's been 3 years since the last one. Luckily we have had mild winters every year since then with temps dipping below 30F probably less than 6-7 times total and I think the coldest it ever got was 28F. I will start with the bamboo that aren't doing well or have died. Dendrocalamu...

Re: Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
Hello, Thanks for your post. I'm also in the Sacramento area, and would love to hear of your experience with dendrocalamus giganteus. Is our area good for this tropical species? - Tom I used to have a pretty good size D giganteus in the ground but a bad cold snap in 2013 top killed it. It lives on ...

What's going on with this bamboo?
This Bambusa dolichomerithalla cv. 'Blue' has been in the ground since last fall but didn't send any shoots up this summer. There is only one culm and it seems to be split down the middle but the plant seems to be growing some branches and leaves just fine. Today I noticed this oddly shaped branch t...

Re: Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
I wouldn't plant it until early next spring, a young asper will die if we get a cold spell (mid 20's). Last winter I tested the hardiness of a couple of Dendrocalamus by burying them in their pots and seeing if they could survive. They have both recovered well but we only got a low of 29F. The only ...

Re: Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
Update Just wanted to do an update on the conditions of my bamboo before they begin shooting. Dedrocalamus Parker Giant I moved this one to a new location. Doing well. Looking forward to the upsizing its capable of. http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac280/noscabs/75B49C45-BAAC-4771-9E48-7E5DD3C2230...

Thanks! This thing is impossible to kill. Just ignored it for months and it seems okay with that.

Re: Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
I'm open to anything. I have a few runners I keep in big stock tanks. If you buy property in the valley and avoid the foothills you can grow a lot of nice clumpers. Around Dixon is zone 9a/b like me. Also there's at least three really good bamboo nurseries in the north Bay Area about an hour or so f...

Re: Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
Tarzanus- I'm hoping you're correct. Luckily my area is immune to really bad freezes unlike more tropical areas like the south, or southern Texas. needmore - I have an Otatea acuminata, and it didn't suffer at all. I tried a chusqea culeou and valdiviensis. Both seemed to thrive in the spring but by...

Tropical bamboo in subtropical climate experiment
Since I haven't heard from erm in about two years in his thread, I decided to start a new tropical bamboo experimentation thread. I live in Northern California about 30 miles east of San Francisco. Considered zone 9b but barely. 2013 had lows of 23-24F which killed all my young tropicals. Last two w...

Re: Freeze Damage
Off topic, but why does the south get so much colder than it does here in central California? The winter lows are higher than here yet it's only been below 20 one time ever here back in 1972. We are much farther north but never get as cold as I see some of the record lows in places way more south an...

Re: Clumping Bamboo Control
I was considering doing something like this myself. But now I'm wondering what will happen to a shoot that is trying to emerge from under a stone? Abort or reroute to a different angle? I have a Bambusa ventricosa in a large square planter with a lip all the way around. One culm came up into the lip...
