Re: Drooping Culms

The foliage seems to be about normal.

It doesn't take any rain for them to touch the ground, they just do, and some have broke.
I have to go out and tuck them behind the dead culms everyday, good thing I didn't remove them all.

Drooping Culms

Hi, everyone. I had total top kill on my grove of yellow and green groove. Amazingly enough, I've regained close to 2/3 of last years size and height. Problem is I'm getting quite a few drooping culms, tall ones and small ones. Not that it's half of the culms, but just more than I remember in previo...

What should I expect?

Hello Everyone! Well here in Michigan we've had one of the worst winters in almost a 100 years. I've been growing bamboo for about three years, and haven't had much experience in winter damage. I have a three year old grove of P. Aureosulcata and P. Spectabilis started from #5 pots. On inspecting th...

Re: Looking to trade

I have several #1 pots of Spectabilis that are quickly out growing their pots, most are 2-4' tall. I would be willing to trade for some groundcover.

Re: Making Rufa divisions: do it now or wait?

I have some 3 year old Rufas that I want to transplant into a freinds yard. The shoots are six feet high, but I think they're done,(starting to leaf out).Obviously this is not the optimal time to transplant, during shooting season.I'm going to take as large rootballs as I can. Should I expect to lose...

Re: Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' bending

That is totally how they start, saw it happen for the first time last year, absolutely amazing!

My spectabilis almost did 90 degrees before it straightened out ,hope it happens again.

Just started shooting, spectabilis is really starting to get going, aureosulcata seems a little slower.

Re: Signs of life in 2013

Like Steve said.
I'm in Metro Detroit, and we are lucky to get into the low fifties. I would say we are 2-3 weeks behind min.
I was seeing shoots from Spectabilis by this time last year, and Rufa started shooting 3 weeks ago. Their has been nothing from either.
This is terrible :angryfire:

Re: Winter damage

I have some #3 and #5 pots with 1-3 culms a piece. The culms are about 5-6 years old, I dug them up in march 2012 and planted in these pots. they established very well, but with only whip shoots. These pots are in the ground ,but in a wide open space. They have suffered almost no leaf burn. On the o...

Twisted leaves ?

Hello everyone. I have a Japonica that I bring indoors for the winter. This is the second winter I have brought it in. I bring it in ,in late november, so it has stopped growing, but in a couple of weeks starts to grow again. All the new leaves from this year are twisting. It's not from underwaterin...

Re: Rhizome barrier

Hey Steve, I a 50' bed right now and originally did the c-shape. I planted #5 pots of aureocaulis and spectabilis with a 80/20 mix of topsoil/compost. I planted them in late May 2011,and by September had rhizomes running up to six feet. This made me a little nervous so i decided to go with a full en...

Rhizome barrier

Was wondering if anybody had any good leads on barrier.I need about 250-300',24"/60. Searched the most common boo sites, and deeproot. Am looking at about $500 plus $150 in shipping. Although that seems like going rate, is expensive. Need to finish a 100' bed and other plantings, would appreciat...

Re: Detroit Michigan Area Cold Hardy: Yellowgroove Nuda,Bis

Hey Bronze. Would be real interested in white stripe(is that pleioblastus fortunei.) Also would be interested in the veitchii.I don't have any nuda so that would be a definate possibility along with the bissetti. I have some p. spectabilis in #1 pots,my collection is still small, so am looking to pu...
