Who else has let their running bamboo go free range?

I have running in the front and back yard. Both thickets are maybe 6 or 7 years old, hard to say. The first few years I was using the mulch trench method and cutting the rhyzomes every spring. Eventually I gave up and now every spring I simply spend a few weeks picking the shoots and let the rhyzome...

Re: Bamboo for screening in Wichita KS

Are you wanting to plant it in the orange area? http://s17.postimg.org/tj7olaa2n/lol.png I think it would be very hard to contain that without a full on large barrier. I also live in Wichita and I have had great success with Phyllostachys atrovaginata and Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis'. I ...

windmill palms

I am in 6b. I planted 3 types of cold hearty palms a few years ago. One of the. Was the windmill. The only one o the three that has thrived is the Sabal minor. The wind mill died the first winter. The other one is small and spiky. I am no sure what kind it is, but it is just sort of hanging on with ...

This summer was too hot for most Fargesias

Last summer was too hot for my partially shaded rufa, but 3 or 4 tiny stems made it. It is nearly finished off now.

Fall shooting thread

Is anyone else getting a second shooting? My Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' is shooting now in south central Kansas.

Re: I installed a multch trench yesterday for rhizome contro

It looks as if there has been some spread in the last month or so. I will keep monitoring it.

I installed a multch trench yesterday for rhizome control

I had three people ask for it the day I did the work. I gave it to my dad who helped me dig the trenches.

As for the rate of spread, that tiny one gallon atrovaginata sent two 5 foot rhizomes where they should not have been and I just planted it sometime last summer.

I installed a multch trench yesterday for rhizome control

It was kind of a balance between preventing growth under the slab and possibly causing parts of the slab to sag and crack.

I installed a multch trench yesterday for rhizome control

I was originally going to rent a trencher and install the 30 inch barrier stuff, but I changed my mind and did the mulch trench so I can just keep an eye on it as they try to escape.

Re: Green Panda withering in intense heat

This heat wave is getting pretty bad. I would say half of the Rufa is burnt away at this point. There are no sub 100 degree days on the horizon.

Re: Green Panda withering in intense heat

That is one of my shadiest spots receiving only morning sun. It gets around a gallon of water every day when it is this hot.
