Re: Bamboo's that thrive indoors?
Pseudosasa japonica is often listed as a good indoor bamboo.

Re: Bamboo Photos December 2012
It's amazing how those short pleios can run: I have foot tall argenteostriatus that is throwing 6ft+ rhizomes after 2 summers in the ground from a 1 gal pot!

Re: Visit to Dave Andrew's bamboo gardens lots of pictures
That stand of gigantea looks wonderful! Wow! I would bet that nigra is pretty shaded, maybe? I saw some here growing in the understory of vivax and on the shadier side of the grove it looked like that, very small and leaning all over the place. In contrast, on the sunnier edge of the spot, the nigra...

Re: Visit to Dave Andrew's bamboo gardens lots of pictures
Thanks for the pics, Steve! Especially interesting to me was the detail of the cream striping on dulcis. As has been said elsewhere, it seems pretty faint. Did it seem so faint in person as it does in the picture? Regardless, dulcis does seem to be one of the prettiest bamboos!

Re: flattening bamboo for decorative knife handle
Am no expert on knives or bamboo. Most of the green or yellow Phyllos turn tan when they age. The exception seems to be P nigra staying dark. If there are any other boos that retain color, or any processes that help to retain color in harvested bamboo culms, I would like to know about them. Phyllos...

What a coincidence (or not?!), moriphen: my robusta 'Wolong' has 7 new shoots right now, just in time for hard frost next weekend. How wonderful

Misc. boos available
I have some boos available for trade or dirt cheap: Fargesia rufa Phy. aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' Pleioblastus humilis Pleioblastus fortunei I also have a pot of Lirope spicata 'Silver Dragon' I wouldn't mind just giving away. It seems a shame to just throw it in the woods :) These plants are all sm...

Re: Holiday Decorations on a Bamboo?
I would suggest only using LED lights to avoid possibly burning the leaves.
I just had a thought for a cool nativity scene: the LED lights can be stars, tiny angels could decorate the bamboo, then the nativity scene could be in front of the bamboo

Re: Some Random Photos Today
That's going to be nice in a year or two! Have you considered adding some green culms in there? I guess the nigra culms are green for several months though... I prefer the look of the sharp contrast between yellow and black; and as you said, there will be green culms in there all summer anyway. It ...

Re: Some Random Photos Today
This is my favorite planting right now because of the contrast in culm colors: aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' and nigra. I can't wait until the culms are actually mature-sized and I can cut all the old stuff out!

Re: Interesting article..Arundo donax
I love Arundo, especially the variegated cultivars! It seems to mostly be a problem when it is planted near a waterway, where pieces of stem or rhizome can break off and flow downstream. Planted in plantations for biomass or used as a garden ornamental, it really isn't much of a problem--as long as ...

Re: Ph. virella for sale - cold hardy bamboo
Steve, don't forget that Phyllostachys bamboos can be much larger and more vigorous in the US than in Europe. It is possible that a 20ft bamboo in Europe could be a 40ft bamboo here. It would be awesome, indeed, if virella turns out to have a size potential about the same as rubro but is even hardie...

Re: Arrow Bamboo Flowering Survival Rate?
From what I hear, japonica usually doesn't die from flowering but usually doesn't produce viable seed either. Funny that I just noticed earlier that some of my potted japonicas are flowering. I am not going to remove the flowers just in case they do make viable seeds that may grow into something int...

Re: Japonica culms turning burgundy
My japonica is shooting now as well. It seems that I always have some bamboos that get the burgandy look in fall but haven't noticed it on the japonica.
